The next time I see someone spout off about how Zs can't be beaten, and that rice is a joke - I will politely correct them on all accounts. I typically don't drag - and stick with the road courses. For some sick reason I decided to go to the drags last weekend.
I didn't drive well - I admit that. I need practice! BUT... I didn't run against ONE car that was beatable. The SLOWEST car I ran posted an 11.7. I was one of maybe 4 - 5 stock cars, and it showed. If you weren't running 120+ traps - you were a dog. 120 - 150 mph traps were COMMON. I saw pathetic looking rice running 135 traps. Needless to say, I was not talking trash.
I'd rather admit to losing to a muscle car instead of the rice however...

skyte, the unfortunate thing about the dragstrip is that "some days you get the bear and some days the bear gets you".
It's unfortunate that the day you went to the strip happened to be the day that the 'big boys' went ou to play. There is always a faster car than yours and sometimes, there may be several that are faster.
Don't dispare. The next time you go out, you may have the 'baddest in the valley' with your Z. It's all in the luck of the draw
there is something to be said about the Z at the drag. I know it can be taken by cars costing less than half the Z. I'm aware some piece of crap looking car can beat the piss out of it. The thing is those cars are setup just for the drag (most of them) I can leave the tracks and hit the onramp doing 80 mph and have no problems at all. I could drag my 12.5 second car foro ne run then drive overt o the road course and turn out a nice run there too no changes. It's a tough balance. It you want just a drag car (what most of the cars you prob saw were) then convert the Z to drag, many people here have done it and have gotten great times. I like the well rounded aspect of the car personally. Not only that but after the drag and road course time I can hop on the highway and head to a corvette meet 500-1000 miles away and not have to ever take a wrench to the car.

the fastest way between 2 point is a straight line but it's not always the most fun.

I totally agree. I enjoy autocross and road racing ten times more than drags. I've met those 800 HP Supras on the PIR road course. I enjoyed passing them just as the ricers enjoyed passing me at the drags. The Z is king on the road courses. I was just stunned by the quality of the competition at the drag races. There were a LOT of 9 - 11 sec cars out there.
last time I was there I saw so many 11 sec cars I felt slow But like I said it's about the overal driving for me. My friend had a great mustang when we were bit younger. Handled pretty good (esp for us back then) but he was determined to make it to the low 12 maybe 11's. Changed springs, slicks/skinnies and the car in my opinion has sucked since. Give me a fast all around car and I'll be much happier.
Keep your head up, esp since the roads you drive have corners

Drag racing late model stuff has come a long, long way. Low-12s for a REAL street car was flying back in the early '90s. Nowdays they build mass-production cars that can do that.
But while there may be a number of 9-11 sec cars at the strip nowdays, very, very, VERY few running 9s/150mph will be driving home from the strip. 9.99 = parachute, not to mention a plethora of other safety items that really encroach on the day-to-day driveability (or willingness to live with) of the car.
I'm not saying there aren't _any_, but even at the track those REAL street cars (and a liscense plate and sticker don't define that!) that run that fast are so very few and far between...especially the 4-banger cars.

I dragged my '01 Z a couple of weeks ago and had a great time. Ran 5 runs and caught myself making a mistake every run.
I was going to be happy if I got into the 12's. Turned 13.1 @ 108.
There was four ZO6's racing and I was in the middle. Two '03's, 1 '02 and mine. Best Z did 12.9, had drag radials.
It was an all Corvette event, sanctioned by NCCC and many were going after record drags. After the altitude correction, I felt much better. It was around 2400 ft alt. The correction I was given was .9744. That brings my et to 12.76.
I'm happy with that. There's allways a faster car out there.
The Z is the best all around, bang for the buck.
Some of those ricers are fast, I agree, but there ugly before the race and ugly after the race.
I don't ever want anybody to tell me my car is "Cute" or "Adorable"
