E.T. Streets + low psi = walking in rear

I have talked to many people on this subject. So far, most people do not even respond to this thread. I am starting to wonder if I am the only one with this problem. thanks to the guys and gals that have tried to help. Here is the problem, if you have any suggestions, I really need help:cheers:

I am currently running E.T. Streets on the rear of my car on 85 Vette wheels (16 x 10 wheels, 26 x 11.5 Streets). Most people tell you to run low air pressure. If I run low air pressure in this setup, the rear of the car is undriveable. When I say undriveable, I am talking that it goes to far side of the lanes badly. It feels as if the rear of the car is going to spin around. Most people will tell you that is the nature of the slicks.

If I inflate to 22.5 PSI, the rear seems to straightens out, with traction problems.

Here is what I want to know...

Why do Camaros not do this at low tire pressure???? Many of my friends that run Camaros have driven my car, and say it feels way to loose.

Is it possible that this could be from Independent Rear Suspension??????

On the last note, when i has my car realigned, the toe was -.68 on the left, and +.16 on the right. Could that be my culprit?????
Does anyone but me experience this, even at light throttle, slow speeds.

How low of pressure are you running it at? If you go too low it will probably hook like sh*t too. Your best bet is to play around with the pressure until you find your cars sweet spot.

Re: E.T. Streets + low psi = walking in rear

You've got something going on, possibly the alignment but I don't think so. At 16 PSI with the stiffer sidewall of the ET Street (vs say the ET Drag) the car should not squirm. Plus the rear walking (which it does on my F-Body BTW, but that is on ET Drags, 10 PSI running 130 MPH things do move around on the high end).

I wonder if you have something wrong with the tires themselves. Try swapping sides and see what happens. Take them to a good tire store and test for run-out.

Good luck.

Les

Les is correct, this doesn't sound normal. I run 28 x 11.50's on my monte and I get the same problem, but not at 16 psi......maybe 10 or 12. I keep mine at about 18 psi and just heat them real well. (keep in mind , my car weighs about 4000 lbs w/ the big block. The heavier the car, the more sloppy these tires become) You may have a suspension problem, check all bushings etc..... How is the car w/ radials?

are you doing a big enough burn-out out of the water box?
if those tires are heated up properly you should have no problem.

Question, did you try running the right side at a higher pressure than the left, sample, 16.5 right 15.5 left.

I use ET Strrets on my FRC I run 14 left and 14.5 right keeps the car straight out the hole.

Just a thought..

I have not tried different tire pressure. guess I will try on sunday at the track. How do you establish which tire to run more in????
It is not so much out of the hole as it is all the way down the track. It runs fine on radials.

CD,

I find that the car will twist more to the right side, so I put anywhere from a 1/2 to 3/4 pounds of air in that side .

Look at some of the pro mods, see how they come out, you will see them dip down to the right rear, left front will come up.

Another question, are you running radial tires on the front? If so you might want to change out the fronts and put bias ply tires on it. From first hand, it's a hand full if you don't.

Other than what I said, I have no clue what else could be the problem

Rear toe will dramatically change the "wandering" of the car under power. Go 0 toe for drag racing.

Bias-ply race tires on the back with Z-rated wide radials on the front can get scary. I don't recommend it. It's the #2 reason people in street cars kiss the wall. #1 being not lifting when the car gets sideways.

Get rid of the toe, run 15-16psi, and do some test launches in a parking lot or deserted road. If you are not comfortable with what the car is doing, DON'T take it to the track. You have a responsibility to the other racers to have your car set-up safely.

IMO...

Hey, just went to the track after fixing the toe. Ran 15 PSI, and the wandering is almost all gone. Guess we all learned a lesson.
Thanks for the help
