I need a fuel cell for my 01' Z in order to move up to a higher
Tech Speed in Open Road Racing, Any suggestions on where
to get a feul cell and what the best / easiest one to use is?
I like to do the "Silver State Classic" and to run at speeds above 165 mph, more safety equipment is required such as
a full roll cage and a fuel Cell.
I also plan on doing the Silver State Classic, so I hope to see you there! I won't do a full cage, so I'll have to stay in a class or two below you. Since David Farmer and T1 racers can get away with the stock tanks, I think we'll be fine too. Also, for the classes that require a roll bar, I've been told the tech inspectors are okay with our stock roll hoop.
The Zo6 is ok per the Silver State rules up to 165mph (tech speed)
So no roll bar is needed, but you will need properly installed
harnesses. I use a Brey Kraus Bar and Team Tech harnesses.
To exceed a tech speed of 165 mph they will not budge on the Fuel Cell and full Roll Cage.
My goal is to get up to 200 mph. So far I've done three Silver State events begining at a speed class of 135 with a tech speed of 165, I then went to 140 and then to 145.
165 is pretty scary at first, but you do get used to it. I would suggest taking a "navigator" if you can find someone to go with you.
It's a great "Car weekend" and a lot of FUN!
Hope to see you there, I will be doing the May event this year and probably the September event as well.
2Charmed,
That's what I read before about it. I've been building my car to do that very type of event. I have a Hardbar harness bar, TeamTech harness and a Sparco bucket w/Hardbar rails. I'm doing suspension upgrades, including new springs with a harder rate in the rear to support the right spring frequency for higher speeds. I have a big radiator with integral oil cooler, and will be installing an Accusump this spring. I'd still like to get the tranny/diff cooler, especially since I plan on doing the September event. To help keep the car stable at high speeds, I'm going to get the ACP C5-R vented hood. It sucks that I have to wait till September, but with all the buildups I'm doing, there's no way I could afford to go in May...especially if I buy a tow vehicle too...
I don't ever want to get more than a rear half cage, so that means I'll be staying below 165 mph unless the rules change. It kind of sucks too since I'll have a quick release steering wheel and possibly a fire system. I'd do the fuel cell if they let me, but I won't budge on a cage so long as I ever plan to drive this car on the street. That's cool though, 150's for 90 miles will be friggin' awesome! Do you know if they'll be okay with a videocam mounted to my Hardbar? They said everything has to be rigidly mounted, and the harnessbar mounts are pretty darn rigid IMO.
Thanks for the info, hopefully you can make it out to the September event as well!
Additionally the fuel cell will give more than the 18 gallons you now carry. Our car only gets about 4.3 mile per gallon during any race. With only 18 gallons that's about 45 minutes. They have some nice cells that are 24 gallons. As they mount in the back and in the center your weight and balance setup will be a little easier.
Good Luck

Video cams are no problem, I run with two of them mounted to my Brey Krause harness bar. I use the BK mount and an IO Port mount. The IO seems to work better.
I plan on doing the September event as well, so I hope to see you there!
I just got back from two days of driving school in Savanagh, so now I'm ready to go even faster!
