I'm looking to try and get in on a DE day at Mid-Ohio sometime next year and I want to learn the track over the winter by studying it. The problem is that when I go to Mid-Ohio's site, they have a lousy track map. Also, my video games with Mid-Ohio have a much different layout than what I've seen on the onboard video on Mid-Ohio's site.
Does anyone have any good onboard video or good track maps with the turns numbered?
Darn, I used to run superbikes there (lived in Dublin, OH for seven years) back in 1999 and 2000. I'll keep my eyes out for something. My dad might know as well....he loves the SCCA events there.
Bob,
Watch the SCCA Valvoline Runoffs on the SPEED channel this month.
The T1 race is 2pm Eastern on Nov 30th. In car camera was on at least one car.
The complete schedule is here: http://www.scca.org/amateur/club_rac..._schedule.html
The Mid-Ohio school has a great booklet about driving Mid-Ohio you may be able to get (buy?) from them: http://www.midohio.com/school/
I have a 9.7 MB video of the first lap of the runoffs I can send you, but I taped it in widescreen mode, so it looks a little off when viewing with standard video software.

How would you send it? I'd be interested.
I watched the video again from the Mid-Ohio site and I think what is throwing me off is that they seem to have added a chicane between the old turn 1 and turn 2. Is this how Mid-Ohio is set up now? The other thing that is throwing me off is the usual irregularities in games vs. reality. They did the same thing with a chicane at Road America back by the kink. I noticed that they used this chicane for AMA Superbike and I hear that the Windy City Chapter of the BMW Club of America is going to be using this chicane next year for their DE. That would suck. I love going through the kink.
Anyway.. I can't wait for the Valvoline Runoffs. Thanks for reminding me, but I already have the time and date written down.
I used to have a track map, I'll check when I get home and see if I can find it. Mid Ohio is a neat track. I ran my car there a few years ago with the Mid Ohio Regional Porsche Club. If you do get in on a track event, let me know. I'll drive up and run with you. I live about an hour south of Mid Ohio.

From the video with the blue NSX it looks like the track is the same as I remember it. I can't wait for next year's Valvoline Run-Offs. I will be there for sure.
Bob,
Mid-Ohio was built with the "kink" or chicane you refer to after turn 1. This series of turns is called the "keyhole" as when viewed from the top it looks like a "keyhole."
From my understanding, CART asked them to add a strip of pavement to take the kink out, adding another straight and another passing zone.
The SCCA uses the kink for regionals and nationals. The Runoffs this year used the "pro" configuration which bypasses the kink and heads straight up into the two right handers that make up the top of the "keyhole." I'm guessing most computer games bypass the kink. Not sure how clubs run it.
I am shooting from memory here, but this is what I believe the turns are numbered (from reading the Mid-Ohio course book about two months ago):
From the pit straight (along landmark 10 in the map above):
Turn 1 left under the bridge
Turn 2 and 3 make up the "kink"
Turn 4 and 5 are the two right handers that seem to make up one u-turn at the top of the "keyhole"
Turn 6 slight right bend in back straight (runoffs started here)
Turn 7 right hander at end of back straight
Turn 8 left over rise
Turn 9 hard right
Turn 10a is easy uphill left under bridge
Turn 10b is easy but very fast right
Turn 11 is another fast right with wicked drop midway through corner
Turn 12 easy right
Turn 13 is fast left
Turn 14 is long slow right
Turn 15 is fast left onto front straight and finish line
I can email the file if your email service can accept large files.
Bob,
I just watched the video on the Mid-Ohio website again and it is pretty good. They do use the kink between turn 1 and the keyhole in the video. As he turns right into the kink, or chicane, you can see the straight leading up to the top of the keyhole. Your event could run it either way.
From my understanding, CART asked them to add a strip of pavement to take the kink out, adding another straight and another passing zone.
No wonder because I only watch races at Mid-Ohio (until recently) when CART is in town. Also, my game is a CART game, so go figure.
Now why can't Mid-Ohio number the turns on their track map? What I'm guessing is the area in question is number 16 by the concession stand. The pit out area should be near 21 or the observation mound as they have it labeled.
My ISP can handle large files. Is there any way that you can zip it though, so it's compressed a little. Don't want you to be waiting all day sending a file, even with broadband. I'll PM you with my email address.
I think a DE day would be great next year with Brad as our instructor.
The Runoff's are coming up on the 30th of this month. Be sure not to miss it even though we already know the outcome.

I wonder if we could put together a DE day at Mid-Ohio with the site as the sponsor? That would be so cool if we could get folks from all over the Midwest to show up.

Awesome idea, but who gets to organize it? After just getting back from the Speedseekers Midwest F Body Association event last month at Road America, I understand that it's no easy feat to put one of these things together.
I was kind of hoping that we'd have enough people from this site at the Speedseekers event, but when Lou Gigliotti put up the information about him being there, everyone on this forum seemed to avoid the thread like it was a tech thread posted by me. Was it the time of year? Location of Road America? The idea that it wasn't organized by a Corvette club? I must say that we had an awesome time that weekend and I feel sorry for those of you that didn't make it.

Yes, just to the west of the south parking area.

No, the pit out is near item 19, the handicapped parking. You can see the pit road parallel the "main" straight, right to left heading towards turn one. The pit out exits at the end of turn one.

I have cable, so no problem. File doesn't compress. 9.4MB video headed your way.

I'll be up to watch you race next year....you better win!!!
Rumor has it, some guy named John will show up again... looking for his 4th, or is it 5th National championship?

Doh! I had it all turned around. I see the pit lane now along the main straight. Now the course makes much more sense to me. Still.. I would like the area down by the keyhole much better without the chicane. It would be nice to have two long straights there. What kind of top speeds do you see heading down the long straight after the keyhole?

Thanks! Let me know if you have any problems sending it.

John who?
Seriously, I think it's completely awesome that you took 6th place for your first outing, especially considering the seat time that Heinricy gets compared to you and the funding. I love to see the "underdog" do so well.
Sub,
I have seen 2 different maps of Mid-Ohio as far as labeling corners.
One shows the keyhole as one turn (4).
The kink (no kink at 2 or 3) in the back straight is 5.
6 is right hander
7 is left hander
8 is right hander
9 is left hander
10 is right hander
11 is right hander
the rest is as you have listed.
Another map shows the keyhole as turn 5. The rest is the same as you listed but 10b is 11. 11 is 12. The easy right (or kink) in the straight between 12 and 13 is not labeled as a turn.
I don't know which is right. I think the second one is.
If you guys give me enough warning next spring I can probably get 15 or so of us in a 2-day Porsche or BMW club school. Much easier than trying to do your own school. It is not easy!
