It was a Red twin turbo that was lightly modded, i.e. intake, exhaust, chip, boost controller etc.. I live in a town thats not really overflowing with competition, rarely do i run into something i feel i wouldn't waste my gas on. Today, pulling on the freeway we began playing tag along, but traffic was so heavy(rush hour) that it was impossible to do anything. He pulled up beside me motioning to follow him, so i did. Five minutes later we came to a open three lane road where we were able to race from a dead stop. Ironically, it rained here early that day so we both hit puddles before we lined up. So i launched conservativly and eased into the throttle, at this point neither one of us could help spinning the rears, but by the end of 2nd i had to let off early and shift because the back end was sliding out too far, doing this my nose moved to his back bumper but as soon as i nailed 3rd my new exhaust probably made him deaf as i blew past him . After blasting to the top of 4th he was about 4-5 cars back and losing ground so i shut it down. Weird though since i've never raced one before, and all the things i've heard. Before we raced i assumed i would have more trouble with him on top end, but it seemd to be the opposite in this race. We pulled over afterward and he was a really nice guy, loved and more importantly respected the Z. Was interested to hear what it had. He told me all his mods and how he planned to do more to it(upgrade to single turbo). I'm sure after that it'll be a different story. But just thought i would share my story, it sure put me in a better mood!
Good story... I feel that if the road would've been dry you would've killed him until probably 4th or 5th gear. I sold my 97 TT to get my Z06. I like the predictability of naturally aspirated power and the suspension on the Z vs. the Supra. My car was a BPU (basic performance upgrade) car and it really got me scared a few times. If you notice how most people wreck Supras it is ass end into walls, trees, or whatever due to the enormous amount of power they put to the rear wheels...
Be happy with your Z, there is always something faster. The important part was the guy was cool.
I'm totally happy with my Z, especially today after this encounter, he was a good sport about losing but it was all in good fun. We were both slightly modded so it was a decently fair race. I have no doubt that if he modded his car more it would be a different outcome. Supras and any other turbo/blown engine respond alot better to mods then we do.
I agree BUT Supras are amazing cars that can pick up over 100 rwhp with small bolt on mods..
This is the nature of Force Induction engines. You can always increase boost, better flow exhaust, filter....etc.... The most HP gain is from increasing the boost.... Just like the 03 Cobra. Those guys are making on an average of 450RWHP to 480 RWHP with just couple thousand bucks in bolt on mods.
Cop Magnet,
With your mods, you should be able to take that Supra even on the highway roll or anything. My car is an 01 and almost stock, but I haven't lost to any BPU Supra yet. I'm 4-0 with Bpu Supras. But, I had lost to 2 before, one was BPU ++ and the other one had a single set up. When I said lost, it was pretty bad.
There are so many variables in a BPU Supra. If they are on race gas, they can pick up more boost and it makes a big different. The 4 BPUs I raced were on 93 octane gas and they were making on an average of 380-400RWHP. My car dynoed at 344rwhp. Once in awhile you can run into some very crazy Supra, but I wouldn't worry too much if it's from a dead stop.
Magnet, any kill against a hi-performance car is a good kill!
I never take Supras for granted. They are pretty damn fast stock and can be made considerably faster with the boost upped and some race gas. Had a Supra TT myself a few years ago and it was a very fast car.
That said, I don't mind running in to one every once in a while for some 'play time'
