How do you get a C5 to 60'?

I tested out my ET streets last Friday for the first time. While I was very happy with the results, I can see that there's A LOT of room for improvement.

My best run was 12.1@114 spinning to a 1.78 60'. I was running the ET streets at 16psi. I experimented with launch RPM and burnout styles, but 1.78 was the best I could manage. I got the 1.78 with a short, slightly smokey burnout, launching at 4500RPM.

Any tips or tricks on how to 60' a little better? 11's are sooooo close.

12.1? Hmm... What's that last digit Cam????

Your 60's look better than mine, so I can't offer much.

But rear wheel torque vs. car weight will limit your 60' no matter how much traction you have. I thought it was crappy track conditions that stopped my SS Camaro from running better than 1.85 60's. Until I got Nitrous. I ran a NA pass to 1.85 then opened the bottle. I sprayed 100hp right at the tree, and cut a 1.71 60' at the same tire pressure, spinning both passes. It wasn't the tires, it was thrust vs. weight.

Cam, You will get it, by experamintation. So much of the right answer has to do with track prep, and matching your technique to the available hook. Nice run!! Practice, Weather, and Track condition will come together. Good Luck!! Ric
PS What was the car telling you it wanted? What did it do on the launch? Ric

cam,
okk first get the tire wet
2nd when you do your burnout do it in 2nd gear not first just pop the clutch (thats why you get them wet) spin tires to 45-50mph get some good smoke let off and roll to the line (no hopping) just go to the line they will stick like glue

Thanks for the tips.

Pat, it was 12.16, so you're .04 quicker on ET, and 1MPH slower.

I'll try that. I'll also try bumping my launch RPM up to 5K or so. Hope my output shaft holds!

Ric, thanks for the words. The car was spinning on every launch- even the 1.78 60' run. Not sure if bringing my launch RPM down woulda helped or not. I think part of it is needing to break in my ET streets.

What advantage does the burnout in 2nd gear vs. 1st gear offer? As long as you can pedal it under red line in 1st, what's the difference?

2d is the gear of choice because the tires will turn more rpms than in 1st. This will make them hot faster.

On BFG DR (not ET Streets) I spin the tires in 2d gear until they smoke and then start to grab. Doing that usually puts the rpm at 6000+ for 3-4 seconds. This way the tires spin at an equivalent of "65 mph" in 2d vs "45 mph" in 1st.

Cam, If the tire is spining that's the problem, so what to do? You have choices. Slip the clutch for a few feet BEFORE you go to full throtle. If you start changeing to many things at the same time, it will take longer to find what's right. Unless you feel lost, make one change at a time and learn from the feedback the car gives you. Try every thing that makes any sence to you, the imfo you gain will lead you to your right answers.
Tony, I think the stock car has 1.5's in it with et streets. I have seen 1.65 on bfg's, the et's will hold a higher launch rpm. Ric

Thanks guys.

Ric, I'll try the things you suggested next time out. Out of curiosity what RPM were you leaving at when you cut that 1.65? I assume you were on a well-prepped track that was hooking well?

Last night I cut a new best 60' of 1.76, but tagged the rev limiter in 2nd and 3rd, and subsequently short shifted 4th (trying to avoid a 3rd rev limit hit), and ran a 12.20@112. I have little doubt that those mistakes cost me at least of 2-3 tenths. Better luck next time I guess.

Overall, I felt better/more comfortable on the ET streets this time, even though I was driving better last week.

Thanks again,
Cam
