I am planning on installing an oil cooler soon. This past weekend at the track, I let the oil temp reach 298 (while gaining on a Viper GTS) before I backed off. I know the oil has no problem lubricating at these temps, but I am concerned about the engine seals. How hot have you allowed the oil to get?
There must be some difference between the 02s and 01s when it comes to trans. temp. Another guy at the track this weekend kept getting high trans temp warnings in his 01, but I have yet to get a warning in my 02 with oil temps much higher than his.
I performed a search for "trans temp" and found that the majority were posted by 01 owners. I only saw a few indications from 02 owners with the problem. Could be simply coincidence.
How about the difference in cat placement. Not real familiar, but don't the 01s have pup cats before the main cats. Maybe something to do with that ?????
I don't think it's the cats in my case any ways as I swapped out the 01 for an 02 center section (manifolds to catback) shortly after I got my car. Maybe something to do with my Borla stingers???
I have 11K on my car and have changed the tranny fluid at 5K?
Low 290's on some of the desert tracks out west and usually mid to upper 280's on east coast.
That's running hard for 30 minutes. Trans temp and oil temp only seem to have issue when i have to pull into pit and then go back out.
When moving the car vents.
Have heard from many top sources that 300 temp is where engine will blow but below that and all should be good.
They all have said 300 is the point they have seen them blow at several times so be aware.

I've been running a little over 280 at the track with outside temps 90-100 when pushing it pretty hard. I found that the DIC warning of high trans temp occurs when really revving 3rd around the track. I've been running more 4th gear, working on my line and carrying speed through turns and find that my times aren't too much slower and both oil and trans run much cooler. I am getting pretty close to wanting that extra torque and power and will likely need to go to a cooler at some point. Either that or mix in some laps in higher gear during the session.

if you run at sustained 300 degree oil temp, you will F up your motor. I don't care who says otherwise. and I certainly don't care what the Mobil rep has to say on the subject.
dave sometimes an arrogant ahole, but some experience on the subject..
If you are running on the track, get an Oil Cooler!!!!, forget the poll BS, cause most folks running hard are going to see 275 on up.
And as the rave already said, ruin a motor.
Just take a look at racing oil temp gauges. Most don't go pass 280 on the dial. That has to tell you something!!!!
