The wx was bad on Sat with lite drizzle. Not enough to make me just pack up and go home, but enough to make me very nervous on track. Unfortunately, someone in A group in a Miata lost control and slammed into the concrete wall coming out of turn 3. He demolished his car and was badly injured. They apparently had to cut up his car (what was left of it) to get him out and had to chopper him out to Atl hosp (due to their specialized trauma center, rather than 2 hosp's closer). I have been doing this for around 10 years and have never seen anyone sustain personal injury. I have seen some cars get blown away, but never an injury more severe than a belt bruise. It shook me up to drive by, moments after the incident, and see the fellow with his head slumped down unconscious.
Does anyone know what happened to that guy? I sure hope he is OK.
Seems like we're on a bad streak in the last few weeks. Two guys were killed at a noon "slow parade" lap at Buttonwillow and two guys were killed during a club race at Thunderhill in the last two weeks.
I too have been doing this for a while and never saw more than airbag burns...
Off-line, mechanical failure, lack of focus, contaminated surface...
ANY of these, and many more unforseen problems, can turn fun to tragedy in a heartbeat. The laws of physics always prevail.
10/10ths, sometimes, is best left to fantasy.
Our thoughts and best wishes go out to those involved...

Broken colarbone along with other bones. We heard sunday am that he was going to be ok. Was riding around with a friend during the same session. When we drove by the driver had his head down. Scary sight.
I totalled a previous car at Mid Ohio. Right at the keyhole. Oversteered into a skid and smacked into the fartherest concrete barrier. Still don't know what really happened...This is a dangerous sport we have chosen...but lots more safer than driving down the interstate during rush hour. Accidents will happen...fortunately, most of our cars are designed to keep us safe. :oo:

I understand the driver was in a Spec Miata with a roll cage, racing seat, webbing, etc. Think what might have happened if he had been in a more "stock" automobile! Since lots of folks run at the track without all of these safety features, that is something to think about. Also, Road Atlanta does not have a lot of run off space and has too many concrete walls, at least by today's standards (and FIA standards). A place like Barber, for example, is much, much safer.
According to SpeedNews, last night, he is now "responsive" and "has feeling in all his limbs".
Sounds like a long road to recovery, though...
Be careful out there, kids...

Try Speedvision's Home page. The piece I refer to was broadcast live on the SpeedNews program Sunday nite about 7:50 PM. It at least sounded encouraging...
Yikes. I, too, have been to many events and never seen any serious injuries. This past Monday and Tuesday at Summit Point, we lost two cars (both totalled) and people were injured in both - at least enough injuries to be taken to the hospital I think they are both going to be ok.

A guy totalled his Z over the weekend at Road America. He was coming into turn 5 at 140+ mph in the braking zone and his left front rotor disintigrated pulling him into the inside wall at about the 3 brake marker.
The driver has multiple broken ribs, punctured and collapsed lung and has a leaking blood vessels in his head. They moved him from the sheboygan hospital to Milwaukee by ambulance because it was to windy to fly him there in case brain surgery was needed.
There are some photos over on HSD of the car after the accident. Look at the 6th and 8th post in the thread.
