claims to be an internally stock cobra.. i find it hard to belive that the internals, even though forged, would hold up high 800's... i need some opinions here.. any experienced members?
I assume you are talking about an 03/04? The stock bottom end is quite stout, though if it is putting down that kind of HP, it's certain must have a perfect tune, etc, etc. I certainly wouldn't give any bets on it's life expectancy (rods are the weak link).
Actually the rods are the strong point. The factory ones are true Manley 4340 moly H beams. The forged pistons aren't the best though.. To date I've not heard of a bottom end grenading except due to a poor tune. There's several people out there that's running 8s with stock bottom ends with no problems. They're capable of handling 1000 flywheel HP without failure. As with anything like this, the more HP you crank out the less longevity you'll see..

Exactly! 03/04's have forged internals, along with an iron block, that can handle mucho horsepower.
Also, there are people running I believe 9's on the stock 03 IRS.. if you can get a "soft" launch the half shafts will hold up..
The Cobra's IRS system is no where close to being as good as the C5's. You must accomplish several band-aids (better half-shafts, IRS brace.. etc.etc.) to get it to hold up under high HP conditions... and after all that you still have to deal with the infamous "clunk". That's what you get when you scab an IRS system to a subframe designed for a live axle. We're extremely blessed that we have a chassis designed around it's IRS system.
Hey undy... what's up! Good to see ya, miss you over on SVTP. The car you talk about is the Strictly Performance car. Yes, it's true, it runs mid 9's. It's got a KB at 22+ PSI and probably about a 100 shot of N20. Don't be fooled though, it also has a auto and solid rear axle. The Strictly boys also have a coupe running low 10's with IRS and 6 speed. I don't know of any 9 second Cobra's with the IRS and most the real fast ones have an auto.
It is amazing though, last year when the yellow car ran 9.5x at 145.x... the valve covers had never been off. This is at 4000+ lbs as well.
the "other" Strictly car is owned by a guy named Jay (Engcon).
I think he's run low, low 10's (10.04) at over 140. And he's still got the IRS, but has grenaded many a halfshaft. I think he's got more r&d on the irs components than almost anyone. He's determined to be the first in the nines with the irs intact.
And yes, you don't need any internal mods to the motor. Just an aftermarket blower (KB) and a good tune.

Hay Sam... whuzzup?? I'd been a died-in-the-wool vette guy for a long time.. Never the less.. I still miss the Cobra and the great guys over on SVTP. Nothing quite compares to 500 rwtq at 2000 rpms.. and that whine....o-o-o-h-h, pure music to the ears.
