Midwest Council Race 5 Blackhawk

Nice August weekend for a race.

In practice my brakes felt inconsistent, and front pads were about 1/2 worn, so I had my 12 yr. old crew chief put fresh front PFC 01s in the Stoptechs.

In qualifying I went out, and 2nd lap in went off in the entrance to turn 3, the carousel. I turned before the berm and hit it with front left and rear left. I came back around, the worker at pit lane said there seemed to be no major damage so I continued in qualifying.

When I came off, inspection showed front "air dam" (the stock one) damaged, and very slight fiberglass damage at front and rear Could have been much worse.

The PFC 01s must be quite hot to work, and I hadn't bedded or got them hot enough....I guess

I qualified 8 or 16 in group, 4 of 6 in class due to those troubles, and was far off my previous best lap time (1:18.5).

We fixed the front air dam up and got set for the race.

In the race, I was able to move up quite a bit, finishing 2nd in class and 3rd overall. Still a little disappointing lap time wise, although there weren't many clean laps. 1:19.5 best.

Our former Z06 owner friend, Drew, in the BMW lightweight kicked butt, qualifying in 1:16s and was 2nd overall in race, only a few seconds off a GT1 car.

Overall, a good fun weekend, but I just never feel very satisfied this year with my driving, and know the car has at least 2-3 seconds in it at Blackhawk...

Funny, how jaded we become. A few years ago anything under 1:30 was pretty good for an AX time and now 1:25 means we are questioning our equipment and driving ability.

I think running off going into the carousel probably added time to the rest of your day. Whacking the berm sure would take the wind out of my sails for a bit. Glad to hear that the car was not badly damaged.

We had nice weather on Saturday.

In AX though it is not a flying lap, right? (I haven't done AX with MWC for a few years now). What is a good AX lap time for a Z06 at BFR?

It's a standing start. from the end of the pit lane. You only have a 30-50 ft run on the timing lights. Some people say it adds about 2-3 seconds to flying lap times.

A good time? I had a personal best of 1:22.9xx which was good enough to take first in classs and 4th overall. The record for Y/Prepared is 1:22.1xx, so I felt pretty good. I struggled to get under 1:25 and all of a sudden it came to me.

I got a "new" set of 315 V710 scrubs for the rear just before the event. I have a pair of 315 GY GS-CS scrubs on the front 9.5" rims. They bring a lot of confidence for braking, but the slip angles are pretty large compared to a 275. I feel like I'm on all season tires on a dirt track.

Interesting stuff, sounds like you are driving well. I just got the Klaxon when I got home and was looking at the times.

When things are right on my car, with 285 / 30 Hoosiers in front, the thing absolutely turns in perfectly, no push, nothing. I think I may have knocked my wheel back a degree or 2 of camber when I went off this time, because at Gingerman this past weekend, she wasn't turning like usual...

Was that your last event @ BHF this year?

There is an event there on 9/17 that I can't go to. I will be there on 10/21 and/or 10/22. Look forward to meeting you if you can make it.

I'll put October down as a must attend. See you there.
