new best

well, I hadn't been to a 1/4 mile in 14 months, so I figured I'd be a bit rusty with the launch and shifts. I had some 3.90 gears installed about 7 months ago, so I was really curious to see how the car would launch:

60ft... 1.512
1/8.... 7.182
mph... 94.32
1/4... 11.281
mph.. 121.22

This was my one and only run. The track got oiled down pretty good 10 minutes after this run, and I had to leave. A shame, too. The DA was excellent and I was shocked at how much better I could launch with the 3.90s. I needed some more runs for my "granny" shifting (and probably my pcm needed to relearn 14 months of daily driving).

Oh well, I still left the track a fairly happy camper.

Great time...You were at HRP right? I was there also. Too bad I didn't get a chance to meet you. There were a bunch of Vettes there last night. I only ran a best of 12.0 @ 122 with a crappy 2.0 60 on street tires. My first time to the track in about the same amount of time as you. Congrats on the new best! Oh...did you see that camaro do the wheel stand and bust his oil pan? That was crazy!

Our cars are very similar (RPM Lewisville) but you have a larger cam and 3:90 vs my 3:73 gears...what is interesting is our ETs are very close but the mph considerably different...my 1/8 was consistently 100/101 but my 60ft on drag radials was only 1.7s launching at 4000rpm (with a little spin) vs your great 1.5s (I assume slicks?) ... the point i am getting to is i think you have an easy high 10 run just waiting on some power shifting ... i think your 1/8 mph could be up there at or above 100mph at 7.0s and the 1/4 at or above 126mph at 10.9s...good luck.

C5 CU, thanks for the compliment

but let me clarify, I'm running stock unported LS6 heads, just the way they came from the factory, except for dual springs.

Where did you go racing? Oh, how I wish there were more 1/4 mile tracks up here in N. Texas.

I assume you were also running slicks or a cheater DOT slick with those ETs.

RPM is a great shop. Keith knows his stuff.

this was at HRP this past sunday evening. My tire setup was ccw et street out back and skinnies up front.

Here is a video of the run:

http://f1.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/jackmarsh_tx

open the folder and click the BM-HRP-050116 file

after watching the video a few times, I really bumped the limiter in first pretty bad. If that 1-2 shift would have been cleaner, I might have run a little quicker. This might also help explain the "poor" 1/8 mph. There's always room for improvement I guess, even for a granny shifter. That 1.51 launch is quite a headrush, so grabbing second was a chore for a once a year racer like me. I wish I could have made some more runs.

edit - and before someone asks, HRP does not show times on the board on sunday instant green nights.

case, I saw another EB car out there. I didn't realize that was you. I usually park in the back of the pits with my red eddie bauer expidition for hauling the tires and jack. I'll let you know the next time I'm coming down, maybe I'll be back for some of the saturday test n tunes starting 1-29-05. Feel free to stop by and say hi.

yes, I know about 1.5x 60' times... used to be common with my old Mustang...and yes, it is a headrush when you don't race a lot. It makes the 1-2 shift hard to nail every time.

Actually for a trap speed of ~122, you ran a very good ET, IMHO, granny-shifting or not. Powershifting might put you close to 124 and a 10.9x. But if you're like me, its not worth the risk.

I agree. It's not worth poweshifting to me, as this is my daily driver. To tell you the truth, I couldn't even if I tried. It's just an involuntary reflex to lift.

It's funny that you say that. I tell other racers the same thing about me and they don't understand it. I have practiced powershifting vehicles at lower rpms, and can do it. But when you don't drive that way normally, it just seems hard to do it at the track.

Involuntary reflex... that's exactly what it is! But powershifting the 1-2 is where the ETs come from.

Blu: Sweeet! I knew you would start chopping away at your old best. That's great for your first time out with the new setup. 60' looks great with just 1 pass. Looking forward to seeing lower. It's always good when you get a Page Ranking. I'm in the same boat with powershifting. I told myself I would and I just couldn't even once this whole year, even at a rental where I had unlimited runs and had time to think thru each run. Personally, I don't think it will save us too much, maybe a tenth. I also think if you get good timing with powershifting and do it correctly, you won't hurt you car, just my .02. I want to analyze your video when I get home. Call me or pm me anytime if you want to chat again. Great job, bro.
