Hoosier has released new R Compound tires. Release says these are available for track & AutoX so I am not sure if they are only true R compound or DOT r & A compound or both. IO will research this further.
Available sometime this Spring 2006
New Sizes available:
315/40x19
325/30x19
345/30x19

I heard from some guys at the SCCA National at CMP this weekend that Hoosier is going to only one compound on the S05s as they are considering it a dual use tire like the Kumho V710 is, so that may match only one compound for the new tires for the C6 Z06. Consider that second hand info at best...
There will be an "A" and an "R" compound of the new tire. I hope to have a set for Memphis (in two weeks), but more likely Summit Point at the beginning of April.

David...I know what R compound tires are. But what are A compound?
David...I know what R compound tires are. But what are A compound?
R = Road racing, a harder compound
A = Autocross, a softer, stickier compound. Lately many T-1 drivers have been using the A compound for racing (20 laps or so).
All tires have a compound rating, similar to UTQR. The lower the rating the "stickier the compound is.
Street tires are = 140 to 220+
High Performance Street Tire = 80 to 140
Race or R compound = 25 to 60
A compound = 35 to 45
Drag compound = 15 to 30
R compound tires have a nominal operating Temp range of 170 to 200 degrees and can tolerate Temps up to 220 before blistering
A compound tires are R compound tires but with a lower nominal operating Temp range. Sometines considereed Qualifying tires. The become sticky at a much lower temp 110 to 140 degrees and blister over 150 degrees.
R compound tires would NOT have enough time to become effective on a 60 second AutoX course where as A compound tires are ready after the first corner or after being preheated.
The lower a tires rating and/or it's temperature range the stickier it is but the lower it's endurance.
DOT A & R tires are essential R compound tires built to DOT requirements, but really not streetable.
R compound tires would NOT have enough time to become effective on a 60 second AutoX course where as A compound tires are ready after the first corner or after being preheated.
NOTE: Preheating of tires my any means is illegal in SCCA Solo competition and cause for disqualification.
Correct, it IS illegal to use a Tire Preheater, such as electric or gas heaters, to preheat the tires in SCCA Solo II or Pro Solo competition.
However, it is NOT illegal to preheat the tires using other passive means such as:
1. Running a licensed car on the adjacent street in compliance with all laws prior to an event.
2. Safely operating the car in a circle or figure 8 in the Parking lot or paddock area prior to entering grid
3. Using a slower co-driver to pre heat the tires in a prior event
4. Use thermal tire blankets to passively retain heat
5. Remove the wheels and tires from the car and place them in a heated trailer or car prior to an event.
6. Park the whole car in a heated trailer prior to an event.
