Phoenix spindle extentions - tell me why I need them

I am planning my first track day with my '04. I ordered the DRM ducts and am changing my fluid to Motul. Are the DRM ducts going to melt, flail around, etc? Why do I need the Phoenix extensions for $149 that are not even available "at this time" at pfyc? I have read several posts here suggesting alternatives, but I am not good with tools, and fashioning my own ducts is out of the question (sorry guys, I am a gal, only the screen name is Hans ) I need a ready-made solution that I can have my brake/alignment guy install. Sorry if that sounds weak... but, I want to do it right. Thank you very much for your opinions.

The DRM duct work fine the spindle ducts direct the air right to the rotor. You will need some good hose to connect the two. If Phoenix doesn't have any LGM has some also. With LGM you need to remove the hub. No big deal anyway. You will need to adapt the DRM 3.5" to the 3" LGM inlet size.

If it is your first track day you will be fine with stock setup with some prep like fluid and decent pads.

I like the LGM spindle better as they direct air more to the center of the rotor and cool the rotor more evenly. Phoenix does not require the hub to be removed. If you get the DRM ducts you can run just them for now.

The stock front brake air ducts only duct air to the wheel well

The DR Duct extensions allow the air to be directed at the rotors, which is an improvement and helps, but they do not duct into the interior of the rotor. but blow air unevenly on the leading inside edge of the rotor. Thus the rotor is cooled unevenly the front inside gets all the air where the outside rotor plate and caliper (where it's needed most) get nothing.

Ideally the air needs to be ducted to the interior of the rotor hub and be allowed to flow out the center vanes between the inside and outside rotor faces.

Either the LG or Phoenix hub ducts do this.

So it's basically an insidious 3 part kit:

1. OEM duct
2. DR extension
3. LG or Phoenix hub duct outlet

And if you want the ultimate system add
4. SS duct screens
5. Seine Systems' MPC mister

Thanks guys. I guess I will break down and get the Phoenix extensions. I ordered my DRM ducts direct from DRM and they said I would be fine with the stock pads for one day, but that I should change the fluid. Do you think that will be okay... to just wipe out my stock pads, then change them? It is a one-day event at Buttonwillow. I have driven this track before, but not in a Z06. The next day I will be doing an autocross. I am usually not hard on brakes but then I haven't had the chance to pilot a Z06 on a road course! This should be great, and thanks for your help.

Hello Miss Hans,

I just had my car prepped by Phoenix with the DRM duct kit and their spindle scoops, but agree that the LGM scoops are a better design.

LGM should have them in stock, I just ordered a set last week.

DJ, curious why you recommend these? Won't they just decrease flow?

Thanks Arnoldir.

Unfortunately the DRM's are already on their way to me so I will be working with that!

Is anyone running just the DRM ducts and the extra tubing supplied with them, and if so, how is it holding up?

Hans,

The DRM ducts are part of the total solution,(You need them) they extend the factory air inlet to the front edge of the A arms, and provide a place to attach the flex hose.

The DRM kit is required for either the Phoenix or LGM scoop kits (other forum members have griped about the lack of info and I agree).

The Phoenix or LGM spindle scoops give you a place to hook the outer end of the hose to. I'd assume you could zip tie the hose to the lower A arm and leave it at that for now.
