Power shifting...

How many of you guys powershift when drag racing... and do you ever tap the rev limiter between shifts... and if you do wouldn't that "slow you down" as the car isn't getting any fuel for a half second or so???

Just curious... I only tried power shifting it once, and it seemed very effective, but I figured it would "cost me more" in parts if I mis-powershifted.

Well there is a difference for those whom want to and those who cannot. I would be the one who cannot

I powershift when I drag race. It does take practice. Practice powershifting at WOT at lower RPM's (ie short shifting) to get your technique down, and work your way up to redline powershifts. Always be mentally springloaded to let the gas out and get the clutch in just in case you miss a gear (which you occassionally will). I do tap the rev limit once in a while, but its so momentary that I don't think it costs much ET-wise- certainly less than 1/10th. If I happen to miss a gear on the first try, it generally costs me 2-3 tenths.

Like I said, its all about practice with these cars.

You will find the corect rpm to power shift your car with practice to almost never hit the limeter, it's imposible to red line the car and power shift without hiting the limiter IMO. You can do just as much damage missing a speed shift as missing a power shift. And if you race enough, you will miss a shift. Ric

To power shift, or not ?

I have been practicing the last few days. I guess my question is,when I power shift it just lights the rear tires up(2nd and 3rd). And this is on the street. Seems to me it is only going to spin more at the Drags.(Past experience). So, if I am using stock tires, is there anything to gain power-shifting?

Ever since Brent Grigsby said he does it, I have ever since. I went from 12.6 to 12.01 with practice. Screw it these cars were made to handle that abuse. Powershift always, besides it alot of run to rip the shifts.

Barron, It does somewhat depend on the track condition's, but my experience has been power shifting is quicker at the track, how much quicker is more the question. Ric

I can relate... 2nd I get kinda sideways a bit, and I get a really good squak outa 3rd to... actually with the cold weather I've had the rear step out on a powershift to 3rd. I've been practicing... I need a shit light really badly! I never hit the limiter when practicing, but almost always hit it a little when racing.

I don't powershift. I shift in a "hurry" , but I release the pedal enough to unload the trans. I can powershift, just choose not to.

Powershifting will gain anywhere from 0.1 to 0.5 seconds depending on how quick you normally shift.

The driveline is under more shock when powershifting, so it will accelerate wear.

Even without powershifting, I get wheelhop on the 1-2 shift running OEM tires.

Is your shifting slowing you down? Try this: Hang something from your mirror. (I like "fuzzy dice"). If they swing towards the dash on the shift, you're not in enough of a "hurry".

Hehehe... woops... I should read what I write (wonder what I had to do when I was writing that?)

So.... you got that 12.12 speed shifting... thats pretty sweet... my best so far is a 12.6... and I'm not very happy with that.

I powershift 2nd & 3rd, but not 4th since it grinds going into 4th on a power shift. I still shift very quickly into 4th, but if I lift off the gas it does not grind.

Ever since I saw Ronnie Sox shift when I was a kid, I have tried to shift like him. It's a beautiful thing.
