On to the Races!

I am finally getting back behind the wheel of my car this weekend. SCCA's Mahoning Valley Regional is holding the last Double Regional tomarrow and Sunday at Nelson Ledges. I get to run in Group 4 which includes GT1 and GT2 (tube frame race cars), American Sedan (Camaros and Mustangs with 5.0 liter V8 pushing 420 hp) and SPO (I don't know much about that class).

I should be right in the thick of things, the good Gt1 cars will run away from me, but there are some old C3 Vettes that run in this class that my T1 Vette can handle. The GT2s shouldn't be trouble, and the A Sedans are a toss up, depending on the quality of the car and driver.

Wish me luck, I will let ya'll know how things play out.

David,
Good luck this weekend. Have fun!
I've never lost a race to an AS car, but had a few out qualify me (Heinricy for one) at tracks I was unfamiliar with. But the GT2s and SPOs can be pretty fast if they are top notch cars. Don't be disappointed if one of those purpose built racecars beats you.

Let us know how it goes today.

Ok all, I am back home from the first day of racing.

Let me say that I have always had this doubt in the back of my mind that I wasn't sure that I really "belonged" in SCCA racing. I drove kinda fast, but I never knew how good I could be. The last six races have been in ITS cars that were acknowledged to be uncompetitive. So even though I did not finish all hat well, I could always fall back on the "it's the car" excuse.

But my T1 Corvette is another story: I knew when I bought it, it would be fast. When Reed won the first race he drove it in, and had similar success in other races, my suspicions were confirmed: it's fast!

Now, my problem is that the only time I had the car on the track was at my last driver's school at Nelson Ledges. I drove the wheels off the car (or so I thought), and only ran 1:18s. Considering that the last T1 National was won with a 1:13 and the track record is 1:11, I was firmly "back of the pack." Depressing, then Reed runs "front pack" in the same car: more depression, more doubts of my abilities.

Well this morning I go out on a cold track (43 degrees) outside on cold tires. And what do I do? Spin the car coming out of the third turn! Not even a full lap completed! What makes it worse is that I climbed the tire wall (observers said I was a fill 3 feet in the air).

Needless to say I wanted to climb under a rock and disappear. I felt like crap.

Well, little damage to the body: front cover has a piece missing on the driver's side, just in front on the front wheel. And the driver's headlamp cover is missing a 1" sliver. Other than that, the car is fine. So I go out a tip toe around the track, just trying not to embarrass myself anymore. I still managed to spin the car twice more going into "Oak Tree" (gotta work on that 3 to 4 downshift).

I pull into the pits after the qualifying session expecting a mid 1:20s time.

When I was shown my times, you could have knocked me over with a feather...1:14.55! I was totally shocked. I was just babying the car around the track.

So I qualified 3rd, behind two GT1 Corvettes. I don't feel bad: 2600 lbs with 600 HP, yeh, they should be faster than me. Right behind me is an SPO Porsche 911 with a supercharger. Again 2600 Lbs with alot of power.

We go out for the race and I take it easy since the tires and the track are so cold. The Porsche passes me and I did not care. I didn;t want to be a hero and win the first lap.

I chased the Porsche for the whole race, had a few opportunities to pass him but did not want to damage his beautiful car, nor mine.

I finished 4th. But the best part, my best lap time during the race was a 1:12.5. A full six seconds faster than I had gone ever before in the car.

The best part, my friend Csaba Bduso, who races A Sedan (4th in 2003 Run Offs) congratulates me and tells me I would have had the poll in this year's T1 National.

Guys, I CAN drive this thing!

BTW, my brother bought a new GT4 Nissan. This one won the Run-Offs this year. He ran it today and was 4 seconds faster than he had gone before, and he won his race.

2004 is going to be soooo much fun racing!

David,
Very nice. Congrats!
Glad to hear you can bonk into a tire wall, go a full three feet in the air, and still come away with a win in the same day. Gotta love it.
Three spins, a tire wall impact, and a T1 class victory. Today is not a day you will soon forget!
Good luck tomorrow.

Brad, I called your cell phone # while I was leaving the track...I had to tell someone about this.

I spoke with Aqua Joe, he got a real kick about the whole ordeal.

Man, am I excited (can't imagine me being excited, can we?)

David,
Sorry I missed you. I was actually watching my first NASCAR Busch race here in Memphis yesterday evening. Couldn't have talked on the phone if I had wanted to. Very loud.
I think I was the only one there wearing a Corvette shirt.
Race was actually pretty good though.

Today was pretty much the same as yesterday, except I didn't tag the tire wall.

It was a bit wamrer (45 degrees) with some sun for qualifying, but I took it REAL easy the first few laps, times were 1:29...slow enough? Then a 23, then a 19, then 17, 15. No more laps after that as an A Sedan Camaro spun and threw mud all over the track right in the middle of an apex.

Since I know what I can do and I am not going to go faster, I parked the car for that session after only 7 laps or so. Turns out I qualified 3rd in the group. That GT1 Corvette and the SPO Porsche.

BTW, the Porsche? There is no shame and getting out run by him. 2,400 lbs with over 500 hp.

I am ended up finishing 4rth as one of the GT1 cars passed me. But I ran consistent 1:13s with out pushing the car and also on old tires (used in the Run-Offs).

Dare I say that I feel I can challenge the track record of 1:11.5 held by Fred Baker in a Viper. I can't beleive how far I have come.

Also, my brother debuted in his new GT4 Nissan this weekend. He bought the car that one this year's Run-Offs. Man, this car rocks. 1650 lbs with just under 200 horsepower. He loves it, and he is instantly a front runner in his class.

2004 is going to be alot of fun for the Pintaric brothers.
