Ragtop Turbo Porsche and me

If any of you know the toll roads in Socal it happened where the 241 changes into the 261...Up ahead I see a Porsche and speed up to try catch it...When I finally get up closer to him I see its a Turbo ragtop with the top down and has the optional exhaust which is an expensive add-on my sons tell me...Anyway, I get next to him but he's got a car a couple of hundred of feet in front of him...I look down and see we're doinhg 85ish, I give him a blip of the throttle in 4th and look over and he's gone cutting me off because of the car in front of him...By the time I get in it he's got 2 on me, extends it to 3 before I get the enertia going and as we wind it out in 4th to 140, I'm starting to gain on him slightly...I picked up about a car and cut it to 2 but as we're in the same lane, he brakes and so do I...I pull around him and go by about 100 and as I cruise by him he's on it again first (stupid me) from about a car behind...Same result, he starts in front and I pick up a car and then we're both out of it...I'm coming up fast on my exit so I have to get off thinkingI was pretty satisfied...When I get to my sons still pumping from the race he tells me they are new this year and go upwards of 185 mph and run about about $160,000...I'm sure the top down slowed him down, but as I did not get front of him, he's probably talking about a kill to his buds, but he knows in his heart and his rear view mirror that he was getting picked up...God I love this Vararam on top...

The Turbo Cab was first available in 2004, with an MSRP of $128,200.

The Tiptronic has a claimed top speed of 185, and the 6-speed is 189.

I had a 1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet. I paid $12,000 for it in pristine condition. A 3.1 Liter 4 Cylinder and I got it to 170 mph. Not bad for stock.

One thing that always has impressed me with Porsches are the fit and finish of the new interiors... GM and many others can take some lessons.

I fear NOTHING made in Germany and unless he has either a $200k ROOCK (Atlanta-based tuner) or a RUF (Stuttgart-based tuner) Porsche 911 Turbo spitting out >=650 bhp at the rear, he would simply be another small German dot in my rearview mirror. Porsche makes a nice car but under track conditions, the Z06 will eat the Porsche Turbo in a straight line and handle as well or better in the twisties. Look at R&T or C&D - the Z06 is the standard bearer in terms of serious performance. Gobs of torque and able to pull 0.95Gs easy. GM deliberatly set their sights on the 911 Turbo when they engineered the Z06 and they hit the target and then some.

I looked at the 911 Turbo when I bought my Z06 and all you get for $125 large (+ tax) is 415 crank bhp...not very cost effective in my opinion. Having built my Z06 the way I want it, its a decision I do not regret and, with the exception of the wimpy Boxters, every Porsche I've seen ahead of me, I've made a point of passing (usually in 5th or 6th gear). If I were going to spend $125 on a car right off the showroom floor, I'd pen another $25K to the check and get either the Mosler Photon, the Ford GT, or one of Reeves Callaway's creations... These cars are far more unique than the 911 Turbo and superior performers. Period.

"Yeah thou I speed down the interstates, I shall fear no German Turbos because redblooded gut-wrenching headbanging American Torque art with me..."

um, I remember some unfortunate 911 turbo cabriolet running into the NE crew back in april/may on our way from hooters to the beach. Needless to say he didn't fare too well with 30 Z's ready to breathe fire at him.

My Porsche puts out 670rwhp and is not a Rook or Ruf. If you ever get to Denver I'd love to give you a shot at making it a small German dot in your mirror. We can race for a beer.

BTW your Z looks sweet!!

Porsche 911's are awesome..Twin turbos more so..

still the Z06 from GM is my personal choice especially considering what its capable of...what it looks like and lets not ignore the cost..

Add those three up and its tough to say the Z06 isn't one hell of a ride.

C6 Z06 even more so right out of the box.
