Here is more from Sunday-this time chasing a Doug Rippie 383 Z06 with AP brakes, etc-and, he can drive-his car was featured in the September issue of Popular Hot Rodding.
I have a newbie question for you and am trying to learn.
In this video I noticed that entering and exiting Turn 5 you were in 3rd as opposed to 2nd, and you held 3rd all the way through Turn 6 (..did not downshift to 2nd entering Turn 6), and short-shifted into 4th before your turn-in at Turn 7. How well did that work for you time-wise? I can see how that would be much easier on the machinery and one less gear-change to worry about (..going down to 2nd, shifting up to 3rd, etc).
Also, what speed were you hitting in the Carousel at the apex?
Thanks in advance! Your lines are very good.

SRV-
Not sure that you should use my videos for instruction purposes, because I am not a pro, I turned in EARLY at several spots, missed some shifts, etc-but, I'll gladly share my thoughts on why I drive the track that way.
1) Turn 5-you are slowing down from 145+. The reason I don't go to second there is because I felt it wasn't needed. It gives a short burst, hard to plant the torque, but when I hit 6, you will be 70 MPH or so, which is 3rd gear.
2) Turn 7-the reason I short shift into fourth is so that I can get on the throttle without fear of the torque forcing the rear to step out-sometimes I do leave it in third-haven't decided what is best there yet!
3) Carousel-Well, I short shift because I don't want to change gears in the middle of a turn to unload the suspension-and my exit speeds are 115 or so, and that is 4th gear-you can see me turning in too early here as well.
bb - were you using that camera mount that you install on a harness mount? I'd like one that'll go on a stock interior (going to the track on Friday - my first visit in a Z). Any ideas?

Yes, but overall you did very well. Hanging with that GT3 like you did says a lot about your driving, despite making some mistakes. That is why I'm interested in your intent, what you were thinking, versus focusing on a few missed execution points.

I wish I would have thought to try that for Turn 5 and 6; it will have to wait until April 2005.
However, I don't think I had enough speed entering Turn 7 to shift to 4th. 3rd gear Turn 7 entry felt pretty good, as well as applying the throttle at the apex and shifting to 4th shortly after the exit point. On the other hand, you probably had more speed going into 7, and why 4th gear worked for you.
Hmm, I just re-watched the GT3 video, and you kept it in 3rd entering and exiting Turn 7 since you were in 'hot-pursuit of a black GT3!' (..the Sheriff in Smokey and the Bandit).
One thing I did notice that you may consider doing differently is after exiting Canada corner, keep it in 3rd all the way until after Turn 14 and onto the front straight. You should have just enough revs left at the braking point for Turn 14. You'll notice that the GT3 really pulled on you after the bridge, and I'm sure it's because you shifted into 4th at the turn-in at Turn 13A and kept it there until the downshift to 3rd preceding the turn-in to Turn 14. You'll have a lot better pull through the entire section revving out in 3rd, which has plenty of hookup too.
