S2000 encounter

Just curious if anyone has run an S2000. I ran into one the other day and was surprised he didn't give me a better run. I was approx. 3 car lengths behind him at a constant speed of roughly 45-50mph and then I see him jump on it and the black smoke came out of the pipes. I did the same, hopefully minus any black smoke and in 3rd gear and then passed him and had a couple car lengths on him before letting off at about 90mph. I expected the result, but should it have been that easy? And yes, he was definitely winding that little motor out to redline.

Yes . . . and with similar results. They're quick in the corners, but don't quite have the displacement to be a considerable threat in a straight-line game. Seen quite a few mod'd S2000 put some impressive power down . . . still not much more than low 300's though.

Seriously . . . watch 'em in the corners . . . that's where more of their performance shines.

I have owned one and raced a few. They are fun cars, but too much work on the track trying to stay in the power band. On the street, or in a straight line - they are no contest for the Z. They compete pretty successfully against the Z3 BMW, and the Porsche Boxster. Although most racers prefer the Boxster on the track.

They are a blast around town. As long as you don't take it for a 150 mile trip - they are a blast.

2809 lbs curb weight
8900 rpm redline
240bhp @ 8300 rpm (thats 120hp/liter!)
BUT.. only 153 ft-lbs torque.
My Z06 has torque in spades, thats why the S2000 seems impotent, but its a hell of a handler.

One of my first races when I got my Z was an S2000 on spray. He kept up pretty good and gained when my car bogged. That was before I learned about using competition mode.

Frankly, I wouldn't waste the gas.......

Drove one and "no one is home" until the upper rpm range!

Approx a year ago, a pesky/cocky owner of one pulls up along my cobra, revs at me, then acts like an idiot through conjested traffic. Finally, the traffic clears and from a roll of about 35mph, we're off. I pulled him instantly and then backed off the gas.........he never pulled up along side of me again.

Love the car, but it makes absolutely no power under 4500rpm, literally! I test drove one, and it really feels slower than a Civic till the upper rpm range.

Did someone get hold of dad's computer? I find it amusing that the mods sent me a note about deleting my first post on the board because I said xxxx, yet posts like this are acceptable. I just don't get it.

The S2000 is a cool car, but as others said, it's not comparable to the Z06. I think they run low-mid 14s in the 1/4. Impressive power from 2.0L of displacement, though. Just imagine if our cars made 120hp from every 1L of displacement

(Don't have a tissy fit, Wayne. We don't always see the posts right away. Chill out, bro)

I actually like the cars. They aren't bad for what they are. The first time I ran my car at the track (also the first time I ever ran a a standard at the track) I ran against a honda s2000 and I ran a 13.8 not sure what he ran but he beat me and the guys friend in the pit comes up to me like his car was the S$*^ cause he beat a Z06. I mean come on a Z running 13.8 should scream "NEDDS A REAL DRIVER!!!!"

Someone above hit the key point...no torque. Many car manufacturers (the S2000 and the M3 come to mind) simply redesign the intake to move the torque peak to higher revs, which generates a higher HP figure. For lower displacement engines (like the 2 noted here), I must believe that this yields an engine with very anemic torque response until the revs are screaming. The HP is great, but it takes torque to twist the shaft and make the car go.

I just can't get enough of big Detroit displacement (as compared to all the wimpy, little import motors) AND get better gas mileage than most of the imports. This car really delivers the best of both worlds (performance and fuel economy). The other cars are very nice cars, but I'll keep my Z, thank you very much.
