SCCA Run Offs on Speed Channel

SPEED CHANNEL, SCCA CONFIRM 2003 VALVOLINE RUNOFFS® TELEVISION PACKAGE

TOPEKA, Kan. (Aug. 6, 2003) –Speed Channel and the Sports Car Club of America, Inc. have announced that Speed Channel will broadcast this year’s 40th Anniversary edition of the Valvoline Runoffs SCCA Club Racing National Championship in its entirety. This marks the ninth-straight year for Runoffs coverage on Speed Channel, the Official Racing Network of the SCCA.

As was the case in 2002, Speed Channel will be broadcast each of the 24 SCCA National Championship races in unique, one-hour television shows beginning in November. Once all 24 shows have premiered, Speed Channel will again air the SCCA “Runoffs Marathon” on December 25, Christmas Day, with all 24 races running back-to-back for 24 hours.

“The Runoffs are one of the most anticipated motorsports events each year, and Speed Channel’s commitment to broadcasting them is a big reason for that,” said Steve Johnson, SCCA President and CEO. “Last year’s shows were the best Runoffs broadcasts ever, and we expect them to be even better in 2003.”

“The unique challenges the Runoffs provide make it one of the more interesting weekends of the year,” said Speed Channel Coordinating Producer David Lee. “It's certainly one of our busier weekends, producing 24 shows over the course of three days, but the announcers and crew really thrive on that challenge. Logistically it's something to see; often we're starting the next show before we're done with the present one. It's really something to watch everyone come together to tell so many stories and cover so much racing.”

The year-end “runoff” originated in 1964 and alternated between Daytona International Speedway and Riverside Raceway, in Riverside, Calif., before settling at Road Atlanta for 24 years. Mid-Ohio began hosting the weeklong spectacle in 1994, with the event growing at a consistent rate since then. Now, the event stretches to seven days, with more than $1.4million in contingency payouts available. This year will mark the 40th running of the SCCA Valvoline Runoffs.
