SCCA T1 Diary: 3/11/2006

Saturday is the first official day of my first SCCA National race weekend.

I am at Memphis Motorsports Park in (dah) Memphis, TN. I am bummed out because I am the only T1 driver entered in Sunday's National race. So I will get my first ever SCCA National win provided I finish half the laps, but it just doesn't feel right. Oh, well. It's not like I told everyone to stay home!

I go out in the morning for Saturday's morning session, which is Regional qualifying and National practice. I run some 1:13.5s off a 1:13.2ish track record held by Lt. Col Chris Ingle. Since these lap times are on 6 heat cycle old Hoosiers, I feel pretty good about things.

After the session I find out that fellow T1 racer Joe Gaudette had some issues with the rear tire on his car. He was planning on using these tires for the entire weekend, but there is no way he was going to now. He planned on throwing a brand new set of Kumho V710 tires on for the duration of the weekend. I told him he was nuts, so we lent him a set of 1 heat cycle old Hoosiers to use for the two regional races.

I spoke with Dave Garner of Hoosier Tire Midwest. Since I ordered a set of tires this weekend, I wanted his take on things about using them or not. He told me it would be foolish to throw new tires on the car since I am the only T1 driver in the field. Since this cost him a sale, I was impressed with his candor. That's why I like workin with Hoosier: good people.

I sat out the regional race and watched Joe run his first ever race. I will let him tell his story in another thread.

All I have to do now is wait for Sunday's activities.

That was nice of you to loan out tires to fellow competitor!

I don't understand why you're the only T1 driver. Doesn't T1 mean anything to anyone or is this particular race not important in the point standings? I've never heard of anything like that where all the racers stay home.

SCCA Touring One (as opposed to T2 and now T3) is a class for slightly modified cars, in our case C5Zs, C6Z51s, Porsche 911 GT3s, and Viper SRT10 with lots of inlet restrictor and mucho added weight (boy do I sound different. don't I?).

Roll Cages, a T1-specific suspension kit, PCM tuning and aftermarket catback exhaust plus DOT R racing tires make up the majority of the mods. The cars are fast as heck.

The whole diary bit? It is a way for me to share my experiences on the track (doing so since 2004), promote my friends at Phoenix Performance (forum sponsor) and stroke my ego...

All the hot shoes were "skeered" of me so they raced at another track...

Seriously, last year there were four of us (Brad Neff "subdriver"), Mike McGinley and Stan Wilson. This year just me. I didn't tell everyone to stay home, it just happened that way. Most of my races in the near future will be fields of 10 or more cars in class. That's a heck of a lot more fun.

I understand, it's a lot more fun when there is some good competition.

Anyway Dave, get in there and mix it up and have fun. That's what it's all about anyway. At least you get to drive your Corvette at crazy speeds without fear of a ticket.

Thanks. Is there a site thats shows what is needed to be done to the car? You know, some kind of checklist to make it T1 ready.

My strong recommendation for anyone considering T1 is to buy a car already prepped such as David's which is for sale. If you want to prep one, call the pros at forum vendor Phoenix Performance as that is what they do.

The actual rules can be downloaded here:
SCCA Club Racing Cars and Rules

A quick snapshot can be found on this page of my website, but this obviously isn't very detailed:
