Well, I guess I am probably the only one stupid enough to manage this, but now I need some input. I managed to completely smoke the clutch. I failed to turn the traction control off and proceeded to attempt to do a burnout. I could feel the car loading down, and just figured the tires weren't wet and they were heating up. About 2 seconds later I realize, hmmmm, that smoke coming from beneath the hood looks different. Gee, that light on the dash looks different. Dooohhhh........ I was surprised when I came back the next pass and 60 footed the best I ever have. A 1.742 second 60 footer. Now however at a constant speed like 60 or 70 mph the car acts like the brakes are activating occasionally. Its doesn't act like a motor miss or a fuel starvation issue. But I am wondering if I toasted the ABS controller or anything else. Any ideas what I should have looked at?
The car is getting ready to get tore down, so I figure while the motor is out I should put a new clutch in it. Any suggestions? And my shifter sucks. I think I am leaning toward the breathless, any feedback? I got in Bud's 2002 Z06 and his shifter, which I believe is stock, feels extraordinarily smoother than mine. Mine feels like there is something mechanically binding.
Well, the lesson for today is, turn traction control off before you look like an idiot.
Enjoy,
Jimmy
I'm certainly not an expert on this, but my understanding (and limited experience based on occassionally using large amounts of throttle in the rain and/or snow) is that with TC and AH on (default mode) if you apply enough throttle to get wheelspin in a straight line that the computer (TC) will cut the throttle (which is electric). AH will only apply individual brakes in a corner to help point the car where you want it. In your case, I would've thought TC would kick in and cut throttle.
However, that said, you still sound like you may have clutch problems. I have read the 01 clutches have had problems and if you drag frequently and aren't worried about remaining stock, I would certainly upgrade to a heavier duty clutch.
Oh, unfortunately you can do it. If you keep it matted(sp) it will eventually smoke the clutch. You can try it if you don't believe me.
But I wouldn't recommend it.
jimmy, a call to cartek for a new clutch is in order and try not to let this happen again always dump the clutch and stabb the gas with your foot on the brake or get a linelock.
A couple new things I learned over the weekend. One is I probably didn't screw up by forgetting to put it in competitive mode. I use a Tech 2 to monitor my runs, I just about did the same thing at the Corvette Challenge this weekend. When I start the car and plug in the Tech 2 it defaults back to Traction Control on. So you must have the Tech 2 plugged in and car running then enter Competitive Mode. I damn near did it again. I started my burnout and could feel the car loading like last time. I stopped immediately. Shut the car off, left the Tech 2 plugged in, restarted and went into Competitive Mode. It appears if you do this quick enough the Tech 2 parameters don't reset. Thank God, to long to get setup again.
That behind me, I have received two private messages on this matter. So it appears that I am not the only idiot who has done this, just the only one who will admit it. For those who inquired. I haven't gone back to the dearlership to try and have it resolved. For what its worth the car has never 60 footed better, it seems to be getting better every pass. The car does suffer from some ailment though. At a constant speed like 60 or 70 mph, the car hesitates, like the brakes are being applied. The motor idles fine and doesn't appear that its a ignition or fuel delivery issue. I am wondering if the ABS is screwed or if the clutch is just slipping. I wouldn't think its the clutch because at a constant speed I am not applying anymore torque to cause it to slip. Weird? My resolution is I am ordering a CarTek clutch or equivalent to simply replace it. I am going to have the tranny looked at when the car is torn apart also. I can't really think what to tell a dealership caused this other than stupidity. I don't think stupidity is covered under warranty. I wish it were.
Enjoy folks,
Jimmy
