What causes wheel hopping?

Hi Guys,

I have my Z06 for about 5 months now, still trying to perfect the perfect lauching technique. When I rev up and drop the cluth @ 4000 rpm my rear wheel hops violently.

I have Pirelli's PZero Rosso Size:295/30-19 at the rear and 265/35-18 in the front.

what causes the wheel hopping? Any advice and suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

thanks

The basic cause is the tires getting and then losing traction and repeating rapidly. Some things that can make it more pronounced are the shocks rebound valving, the design of the rear suspension, tires, tire pressure, suspension bushings and launch RPM.

The vettes independent rear suspension and shock rebound damping are big factors.

Some things you can try are more fuel (full tank) which of course adds more weight and therefore aids traction, lowering the tire pressure, and trying a lower launch RPM.

Interesting..... I don't think I've seen wheel hopping mentioned as an issue with the Z very often - also haven't seen the Pirelli's mentioned much. Maybe we need a survey...

For many years I drove a Saab turbo (hey, GM liked them enough to buy them.. ) Over the course of many miles and many tire changes I noticed a starteling difference in hop with tire selection. Coincidentally, the hop was worse with a Pirellli. For me overall, the biggest factor that is the easiest to control is the tire. Unfortunately only trial and error will tell the story.

Good luck. I can vouch for the factory F1's, they don't seem to hop under any conditions.

George

Its my belief that the hop is caused by the rear suspension bushings flexing too much. It has been my experience, that any sort of compliance out back will cause wheel hop.

If you have the compliance pulled out, and still have hop, start looking at the shock valving.

Could it be that the lower profile tire (295/30-19) would be more likely to wheel hop? I don't really know. Just an idea.

Well that's your problem, I rev the engine up, drop the clutch about 4000.. No wonder....

Go back to basics, do a search for the post by Ranger.. He is the master on how to take off in one of these cars..

Just my .02 worth...

Say there Red,
I have the same size combo but MPS's and if the pressure is too high she'll hop every time I pull a gear. I've found 22-24 psi to pretty good. And I don't lauch that high with street tires. I don't know about all the other variables, maybe I just lucky to resolve it with tire pressure, also like a someone said above....I'm not a Pirelli fan either. Good luck, there's a lot of trial and error.

The biggest problem with the C5/Z06 concerning wheel hop is the shocks.

"o4's are sumwhat better.

If you use Penske DA's the hop will dissapear completely

Ours hopped violently, especially on the 1-2 shift. ET Streets cures hop.

Drag Radials and your problems gone. Look up on the top header under SEARCH and look up "wheel Hop". Wheel hop can break things so be cool.
