What is tech II ?

I have read a bunch of posts concerning evacuating the ABS in the Z06 and the term tech II is used... Is this a tool, device, or method that a dealer or a shop uses to activate the ABS and empty the fluid.

Thanks and pardon my ignorance...

Mike

Tech II is a device dealers use to diagnose your cars computer when you have trouble codes. It can also be used to activate/deactivate various computer controlled options. This is a pretty simple explanation but it should be close.

Yes, it is GM's electronic hand held analyser/programmer that is a service interface with all of the cars computer modules. They cost around $2,500 and are hard to get if you are not a GM service tech.

If you are changing the type of fluid in your brake system you should or have the service tech bleed the ABS (using the Tech II) on the initial exchange.

Normal system bleed /purge will not bleed the ABS.

DJ will any harm come of not purging the ABS?

I was going to flush my system, now I am having second thoughts.

I was going to replace the fluid with GM recom. fluid.

Thanks in advance.

Darwin.

hey Darwin you can get MOST of your old fluid out if you activate the ABS right before you bleed-it will force most of the fluid to the calipers. I put speedbleeders on so I could get most of the old fluid out-you should see how much of the fluid goes to the back wheels when you do that! Corvette Dave taught me this and it works well, my fluid stays pretty clean most of the season.

My "quick" way to flush is the turkey baster method from the reservoir, but I take the wheels off every couple of DE events

This is a Tech II:

Cost is about $3,200. Not something for the shade tree mechanic.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I am going to Motul and just wanted to know if this was something I could get/do to get rid of all the old fluid.

As DJ said above, the best way to flush the whole system is to use the Tech II to activate the ABS so the fluid in the ABS reservoir can be flushed simultaneously with the rest of the fluid. But... (and I know DJ disagrees with me here)...

It isn't the only way.
- Make sure your new fluid is compatible with the old
- Suck old fluid out of reservoir and replace with new
- Give all four calipers a good bleed until clean fluid from the reservoir has made it all the way to the caliper. This will get the majority of your fluid replaced with the new fluid.
- Go out a drive your car and activate ABS, flushing the old fluid in the ABS system out and into the lines with the new fluid resulting in a mix of old and new fluid.
- Rebleed all four calipers. At this point you will have the vast majority of the old fluid out, but certainly some old fluid is still mixed in. If you have time, repeat the above in a feed and bleed approach to getting the old fluid out.

DJs caution, and I tend to agree, is that if you don't do the tech II method, and the first time you activate ABS is on the track at the end of a 140 mph straight with extremely hot brakes and extremely hot fluid, then when the old fluid comes out of the ABS system and hits the high temp lines and calipers it may boil creating a very very soft pedal... not something you want as you face a 60 mph hairpin.

Exactly Sub,

Many have choosen the easy way but after experiencing EPF
( extreme pucker factor) they immediately see the light and rebleed with the Tech II.

Using the Tech only adds abot 30 minutes to the labor cost and only has to be done once.

It's relatively cheap when you consider a new Z06 crunched up against the ARMCO barrier as they are using the Hurst tool to extract you and your broken legs.

Hey, where can I get one for $2500.00 I'll take it.

Actually, they can be had fairly easily, but they are around $3,000.00 to $3500.00 depending on options and branded a bit different.

Got my dealer checking to what kind of deal he can get me.

Think I'll contact GMpartsdirect.com and see what they can do.

Joe

Thanks for the info. From what I have read Motul RBF600 is compatible with the oem gm fluid correct? I bought 4 bottles and I assume this should be enough? I absolutely hate taking any cars to the dealer.

Also I will be installing lines and front pads. Waiting for everything to arrive. Running CMP in early March and Mid Ohio in early april. Cmp is hard on brakes but really safe layout and not real high speeds.

Thanks and look forward to your response.

Correct.
I use the Motul RBF 600 and have been very happy with it.
However, I've read it will absorb moisture faster than a stock Dot III fluid which may lead to a decline in performance. Not an issue for me as I bleed fairly often.
