Who's Up For Some Open Road Racing?
It's that time of year again. How's 'bout haulin' azz down a Texas highway at about a buck-fifty and doing it legally? Nothing but 118 miles of sage brush, cactus and some buzzards!
Every year in April about 150 race teams converge on Ft. Stockton, Texas for the Big Bend Open Road Race (after a couple of incidents last year, they're thinking of calling it the West Texas Buzzard Eradication Program).
The object is to come as close as possible to your target speed. Speed classes start at 85 MPH and go up in 5 MPH increments to 160. The difference between 1st and 2nd place is sometimes less than .01 MPH and the competition is fierce. We averaged 124.6 MPH in the 125 class last October and came in 6th! No prizes or cash, just a trophy and bragging rights.
There is an unlimited division where the speed is as fast as you've got nerve for. Most of these guys show up with retired NASCAR Cup cars and scare the bejezus out of the wildlife in the area. One was radared @ 217 MPH thru the finish line last year.
I know another member here (Malcolm) will be entered with us. Anybody else?
