In the 12's !!!!

My vette has a hurst shifter and the old style Varam other wise pretty close to bone stock. Just got back from Byron Dragway. Made 7 passes with the best a 12.89. Two others were 12.98 and 13.07. My 60' times were pretty
bad at 2.1 and 2.2. Instead of a hard launch with some wheel hop and burning up 1st gear the secret was to come out easy and gradually apply the throttle until on the floor. Speed shifts only as I didn't want to break any thing. I went to the same track 2 years ago (13.4 ET) without the Vararam and Hurst and this time I had a shift lite (Raptor) set at 6000. I'm satisfied and can now feel good about doing any mods and trying to get the car into the 11's.
If I stay with natural aspiration then heads, cam, headers, clutch, hardened axle shafts could get it there. I think a little more practice might allow you to break 12.50 on this car.
The most fun was when I lined up with an older Z28 and we went neck and neck until I got 4th and pulled him by a quarter car lenght or so. He did red light so I would have won anyway but it was COOL.

Re: In the 12's !!!!

Fred,
your vette will get into the 11's easy with the mods you mention. Using the ET streets for tires, your 60' will drop for sure. RobZ is pulling 1.41 60' times and running a 10.55 quarter with his NA Vette. I think he has 390 gears..don't know what you are using. Pit-man

Re: In the 12's !!!!

Hey Bob,
Everything you've listed in your signature are the same things I'm considering at some point. Even HPTuners is my choice in programming the ECU. There was a post on here somewhere that said some guy got close to 500 RWHP with a package from one of the tuner shops. I think he spent about $7K if I remember right.
Your 430 RWHP is probably about 500 at the flywheel and pretty impressive.

Just to be fair here, you have to remember that Rob (Robz) is one of the better drag racers here on the site with a ton on passes under his belt.
Not everyone can pull those type of 60' and trap times on an NA Z. Most folks would go through an awful lot of halfshafts even trying to pull those 60' times.

Re: In the 12's !!!!

Mike I agree with what you are saying. I've got a total of 10 passes now and would think with 50 more I might get my Z down to the 12.50's but doubt I could keep from breaking something first. Have you had your C6 Z06 to the track yet? I'm thinking I would need the hardened axle shafts, the DTE plates and maybe the Textralia clutch too. I like the C5-R idea you went with. Before I start the mods I've got to get a 4 post lift. I've spent way to much time on my back under the cars I've had over the past 40 plus years. I once replaced a starter on my new 1966 396 Impala on the street in Chicago. The temperature was -10 deg. F. Brrrrr!

Re: In the 12's !!!!

Hi Fred,

Nothing to be ashamed of. Actually, getting into the 12s with an average driver and an unmoded Z is respectable. Nothing to be ashamed of. I see it all the time at Silver Dollar, guys running C5 Z06 Corvettes and lucky to cut a 12. Like what's been said, it takes skill and lots of practice with these cars.

Corvettes have never been "dig" monsters due to the independent rear suspension.

Re: In the 12's !!!!

Hey Jub,
Thanks for the kind words. I had it in my mind that if I couldn't drive it well enough to get into the twelves I would keep practicing before making any mods. I've always believed that stock Z06's at least the early ones were 12 second cars and driving skill was the only thing that could prevent one from getting those ET's. I did just barely make it but it is in the twelves so I feel good that I was able to do it. Are you using HPTUNERS? A while back I think you said you were.

Re: In the 12's !!!!

That's very true Mike. Had to laugh thinking about all the half shafts. Some of his vids look like he would break the seat. I can't even break into the 1.5's yet. I Just replaced my gear with a 390 last week, hope it helps. I was just telling someone that I will probably get wheel spin now and go slower for quite a few runs.

I'm using EFILive and I believe I have my car tuned pretty well but when it comes to drag racing, I just can't seem to do very good.

Most of it has to do with getting a good " hole shot" and I'm not willing to subject my car to that kind of abuse just for bragging rights especially when there are others out there that can get these cars into the 11's with nothing more than drag radials.

It's really up to what's important to you. I know my car is fast but I don't want to abuse it to prove it. I hope this makes sense.

Enjoy the car and let it live a long life so it can give you years of enjoyment.

Sheesh, I'm beginning to sound like an old fart.
