BOOM! Well it appears something in the driveline went BOOM! I was going out to a local hangout on the highway and I accelerated in a clearing in 4th gear and as the rev's got higher it went BOOM and I was like oh **** I hit the rev limiter. Shifted into 5th gear, nothing just revved, put it in 6th and it revved, then almost every gear even 1st gear while going 40-50mph. So I drift to a stop and as i'm going F**K F**K etc etc you get the point. While sitting still with the engine running and revving it I could shift into all gears and the speedo wouldn't move no matter how much I revved the car. So trailered the car home and jacked it up. Turning the rear I can feel a rough spot, not a grinding but rougher. You can feel a difference when putting the car into gear with rolling the rear tires and hear the trans moving in gear. So the car is down, not sure what it is and REALLY REALLY NOT HAPPYE RIGHT NOW!!!!!

Bruce,
Sounds to me like a broken trans output shaft! Been there a couple of years ago,,,,,but mine was caused by a POS used DTE rear losing teeth off of the
ring gear and the broken teeth getting caught between the reluctor and the inside of the housing causing a sudden stoppage. Happened at Firebird raceway during HPDE at Winterfest 1 with my daughter Lauren driving the car.
Scared the crap out of her! I feel your pain bro!

That sounds exactly like what happened to mine last summer. Accelerated from 4th to 5th on an open black top and BOOM....no drive gears. Trailered it home, jacked it up...rolling the tires around I could hear a metalic cling, cling, cling, coming from what sounded like the rear of the torque tube. It ended up being a broken mainshaft (trans output). Broke off at an angle about the last 3 inches of the shaft...new transmission and new differential...went ahead and put in new drive shaft couplers while I was at it...rear aluminum/front rubber.

Re: BOOOM!!!!!! Yup thats what she did tonight :(
I'm sorry to hear that. I've certainly had my share of drive line issues, so I feel your pain. Counting stock parts my Z has seen 4 tranny's, 3 diff's and 3 clutches. I'm thinking of just installing quick disconnects everywhere...
I know you're feeling down now but look on the brighter side... you can go with 373 gears and hardened shafts.

If i had to I'd go 3.90s :( If you come up with ANYTHING ON THE QUICK DISCONNECT LET ME KNOW!!!!!!! I'LL SPONSOR YOU!!!!!!!!AND BE YOUR TEST DUMMIE! If we could just get the car to be half as easy as my Fbody was to take things apart. You can have the clutch out in 1.5hours by yourself, same for rear or trans or almost all in 3hours. Even the cam jobs are kindergarden material in comparison to these damn corvettes!!! I love my car but hate working on it.
Bummer! That sucks - especially when you're not even at the track beating on it. Best thing to do is look at it as an opportunity to make it better than it was Good luck with the diagnosis & rebuild.

I'm not totally convinced of the trans output shaft yet. How the heck can I shift the trans mission revving the car NOT USING THE CLUTCH AT ALL???? There should still be some binding of the transmission going from gear to gear with the tranny spinning at different RPM's not using the clutch?

What a great attitude!

I figured I would get more than 700 miles out of it. I was wrong. The other two trannies died because Mike O'bozo sent me out of his shop with no oil in them. Yes, twice. So I'm used to disappointment. I can laugh or I can cry, it's up to me.
