There was an article about this in the American Homebrewers Association publication (Zymurgy).

Thanks for the info. Regardless, whoever said it sure knew what the hell they were talking about.

OK Ladies the verdict is in.
Took apart everything minus the clutch last nite by myself so that sucked.
BROKEN TRANSMISSION MAIN SHAFT! Damnit Blu and Kurtomac are on top of their game folks LOL! I really freaked myself out, when I would turn the torque tube shaft the rear spun. I was like OMG its either the clutch or nothing wrong with the car and I took it all apart!!! But when I got the diff and trans apart that was my present So there it is folks.

Re: BOOOM!!!!!! Yup thats what she did tonight :(

Like I said before, wehen that happened to me it broke off the last 3 or so inches of the mainshaft at an angle and it pretty much destroyed the differential. So, I ended up having to replace both the trans and the diff. Internally, the trans was not hurt other than the broken main shaft, but that is outside the trans (last 3 inches or so), but trans would have had to been totally taken apart...with labor, parts, etc...it was easier just to buy one from RPM....RPM trans and 3.90 RPM diff and I'm very happy with both.

Re: BOOOM!!!!!! Yup thats what she did tonight :(

I've heard of those failing for the road course guys as well, so when Phoenix Performance rebuilt my car last year I had them put a new driveshaft in so I wouldn't be the guy starting this thread.

Sorry to hear your woes. Hope you get it fixed and back out soon.

Re: BOOOM!!!!!! Yup thats what she did tonight :(

Man, that looks all too familiar! When mine let loose, the damage was almost identical. Broke 5 of the bolt ears off the pinion sleeve, the trans output shaft sheared off right where it goes into the pinion gear and took some teeth off the ring and pinion gears. I'm pretty sure mine was caused when the teeth came off the ring gear and jammed against the housing causing a momentary stoppage of the rear which broke the output shaft.
This happened on the road course during an HPDE with my daughter driving the car,,,,scared the kid silly!
I replaced the shaft with a hardened one from G-Force,. got a billet pinion sleeve from DTE and also replaced the clutch packs in the diff with parts from RPM along with a hardened right shaft and gear. (already had the hard left shaft). Also got a set of Motive 3.73's which didn't hold up very well,,,,took a few teeth off of them 1st time I did a 5k launch with the ET streets. Went back to the original 3.42 shot peened set that came with the car and haven't had a problem since. Good luck Bro and keep us posted.

Re: BOOOM!!!!!! Yup thats what she did tonight :(

yep...that is exactly what mine looked like. From what I understand, when the shaft does break, almost everytime it is jsut like that..the very end where it goes into the diff and breaks at an angle. I also broke several bolt ears off the pinion sleeve. That sucks, but buiild it back better/stronger...hope you get it back together soon.

Re: BOOOM!!!!!! Yup thats what she did tonight :(

Heres a quote from Corvette forum from one of the vendors DTE that makes rear diff's, strut braces etc for the corvette and other cars.

Quote:
Bruce-
In case you didn't get my reply via email..

Hi Bruce,
No problem on the parts and I can understand where you're coming from on the $ thing- especially with your wedding coming so close. Got to keep the other half happy! LOL

I do have a 2009 C6Z pinion shaft support, the related front/rear pinion shaft bearings/races and the crush sleeve you can have. All of it is in excellent, new-like condition, so consider it yours.

The only take-out ring & pinion gear set we have that is of good working quality is a low-mile, Motive Gear 3.73 that has already been micro-polished and cryogenically treated. It was removed from a good working differential that we had previously built for a customer of our's and the only reason we changed it out to the 3.15, was because he was adding a big cube stroker engine with nitrous. We figured that the 3.73 gearing he currently had was going to be far too low for his application with all that massive torque; hence the swap out. If you want that also, consider it yours.

If we pack the pinion shaft support stuff in the diff. gear box, we should be able to ship it to you for about $25. Just give me a call to confirm your shipping addy.

Hopefully this helps you get out of a pinch so you can drive your car for your wedding, parties, etc. if you need anything else or if you have any other questions, give me a shout.

BTW- No "sleeping with me" needed to get these parts either.... Yikes!! LOL!

Regards & best wishes on the wedding!
Phil
