M12trans VS. MN6trans w/4.10 rear at the track questions

OK I've been looking for a built transmission to put in my 2000 FRC. Right now I have a MN6 in the car factory. I came across a member willing to sell me his M12 built tranny minus hardened main shaft. Curious as what peoples opinion of putting a M12 tranny in as opposed to the MN6 with 4.10 rear gears. Heres the gearing of the two transmissions.

LS1/MN6 LS6/M12
1st Gear 2.66:1 2.97:1
2nd Gear 1.78:1 2.07:1
3rd Gear 1.30:1 1.43:1
4th Gear 1.00:1 1.00:1
5th Gear 0.74:1 0.84:1
6th Gear 0.50:1 0.56:1
Reverse 2.90:1 3.28:1

Just give your opinion will it hurt at the track or help, pro's and con's of either will be helpful. Thanks

Bruce

Re: M12trans VS. MN6trans w/4.10 rear at the track questions

I would stick with the MN6 with the 4.10 diff. IMO, 1st and 2nd in the m12 are a bit too short to use with the 4.10's. I'm running 3.73's behind my m12 and it's just right IMO. Good combo for the road course and drag strip.

I agree with Jim,, M12 will hurt you more than help.. The M6 is stronger anyway..

Just because I am on the 4th clutch in 24 months, don't start to think an Automatic is the best bang for the buck !! Besides, the M stands for Mighty and I don't have to check my trans temp before I run !!

I do hear the MN6 with the 410 gear is about the same as my M12 with 390.
You guys are prob right about that combo being too much. We need some guys running that combo to chime in here, see what their 60' and 1/8 & 1/4 is doing.

You win Ernie, I don't even have a running car right now !!!

Pit, I probably have the most experience with both trans for the strip with an n/a setup. Back in the day Brent and I experimented with this and figured it out thru many, many passes.

Re: M12trans VS. MN6trans w/4.10 rear at the track questions

I'm running the MN12 w/3.90s and 1st, 2nd & 3rd are over fast with the 383 stroker. With the 3.42s I could run a 12.0 with the stock Goodyear F1SC tires. With the 3.90s... high 12s. If I ever need a new trans, I'll probably switch to the MN6.

So, did you see any ET differences Rob (on ET Streets ) between a 390 and a 410 with the M12 Tranny ? I can see that wheel spin problems with street tires and drag radials not properly heated might slow you down.

Re: M12trans VS. MN6trans w/4.10 rear at the track questions

When I had the 3.90's in mine, traction with street tires was a BIG problem, so I just wound up running Nitto D/R's all the time which did help a bunch on the street, but they were not very good on the dragstrip. Just picked up a drag pack, so hopefully traction won't be an issue anymore at the strip. I'll know soon as we have a track day at AZ Speedworld planned during the Winterfest.

Jimbo,
I have MN12\390 and have no traction issues at all running ET Streets. At first I couldn't drop the pressure enough because of the Drag radials on the front. Once I went skinnies and 12 psi in the rear..it just digs in and goes. I never got the Robz 1.41, but I did hit 1.48. I think if I had a little more torque I could have dropped a little more. I was at 400 rwt with the baby 224 cam. I THINK YOU WILL BE VERY SUPPRISED WITH THE DRAG PAC !!

I'm counting on it Pit! Now the snow has just got to melt so I can get the car out of the garage and on to the trailer!
