Re: Do you do auto-X ?

Road racing is more exciting than autocross. It is also much more expensive. A typical autocross that requires that I tow up to Hallet or the Sheriff's track in Oklahoma City or South to one of the Houston area tracks is still an order of magnitude less expensive than road racing. My autocross car is a dual purpose car. It is also a street car. There is NO WAY to do this in road racing. Setups vary radically by track. Gas, entry fees, lodging for an entire weekend, and towing expense. A road race tow rig is much heavier since so many spares, parts, and tools are required that are not required in Autocross. Autocrossing is just not that demanding of the car and wear and tear is much less.
I believe to compare the two is irrelevant and flawed. Road racing is much more exciting and physically demanding. Having done both, I think I know something about this. I'm glad a road raced and I am glad I no longer road race. Both are fun but, seat time is much higher in autocrossing when compared to preparation time. I spent more time in the shop than in the car when road racing. And, I mean a lot more! However, the time on the road race track is infinitely more demanding and much more rewarding. It is a rush.

Re: Do you do auto-X ?

Since it bumped.

Everything should be experienced at least once.

With a little club member encouragement, I took the plunge and did a low speed auto-x last October @ PPIR. Everyone said I would become addicted. They were right!

Now I have to figure out how I am going to pay for this new adrenalin rush. Thanks guys! Now my wife has to get a second job!

Here is a vid of my first time in the cone zone. I thought I was doing pretty well until right near the end. You’ll see. Enjoy.
A special Thanks to my mentor Wayne for not only coaching me, but also for the use of his GoPro to capture the beginning of me going broke paying for this new addiction.

Re: Do you do auto-X ?

I have been autocrossing for more than 2 decades first with a Classic Mini Cooper, Miata, BMW M3 (E30), Subaru STI, Mit Evolution, BMW 128i, BMW 135i and now I will give the Z06 a try. Autox you have to be smooth (slow) to be fast just like golf swing smooth to hit far.

like they say "Drag Racing is for fast cars Autocrossing is for fast drivers","If autocrossing were any easier they would call that road racing"

Of course you're right. Any fool can drag race, no need to be a good driver.

As long as you have fun, that is all that matters.

Re: Do you do auto-X ?

Just done my first autocross in vette and it was a different experience especially with 11 year old OEM tires. Ended up 4 seconds off the pace, it was a blast trying to keep the rear end from exchanging places with the front

Re: Do you do auto-X ?

You need to get some new tires ASAP. 11 year old tires are unsafe at any speed. A thread separating can do a lot of damage to fiberglass and possibly cause an accident going back and forth to the track (and you will notice a marked improvement in lap times with new tires). When my tires are about done, I find an empty parking lot and finish them off...

100% agree, the vette is still on original tires. Can I go wider tires in the front with stock rims?

Yes you can. Currently I am running Nitto RII Extremes (no longer available, but I just bought the pair last year) in sizes 305/35/18 and 275/40/17 on stock C5 Z06 sized rims with no problems. Will probably go to the NT01 when these are done.

I use these tires on the street because its nice and warm here in Arizona and they do stick in the heat.

Go to this thread and go to rocketsled's post (#3). Go down to the bottom of his post where his signature is and click on his signature on the Rocketsled/02Quicksilver portion. That should take you to his homepage where, if you scroll down to the bottom you will see a link for a tire computation spreadsheet.

Tire sizes on stock C5 Z06 wheels.
