"Legal" Harness Bar for C5 Z06

Does anyone have any suggestions on a harness bar for SCCA autocross that meets the stock class rules?

The rules say that it "can not add chassis stiffness".

Has anyone modified one to be legal?

Thanks,
Chris

I use a "Hardbar Harness bar" in my Z06.

As mentioned, the Hardbar is very good and has the added advantage of not utilizing 'downtubes' which can make installing aftermarket seat rails for example, simpler, depending on the mount.

The Brey-Krause bar and belt mounts are also excellent, but use downtubes.

Either will work in accordance with the rules, but Gary's stuff (Hardbar) is what I recommend as well.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The hardbar looks like it would work well but even in the add it says "the bar stiffens the chassis".

Has anyone had to defend this at a national tour or solo nationals?

Thanks,
Chris

Re: "Legal" Harness Bar for C5 Z06

Both the HardBar USA and Brey Krause units ARE legal for Super Stock classification.

Both will add chassis stiffness between the B pillars and Hardbar even advertises as so.

A horizontal harness bar is an ALLOWANCE for the purposes of installing racing belts, ONLY.

The Caveat is in the Rules wording in that although it allows a horizontal Harness bar, presumably attatched between the B pillars (which will add chassis stiffness) it must be installed WITH and be used for the purpose of attatching the Driver Restraint System (racing belt shoulder straps) and can serve NO other purpose.

IE:
- you cannot install the harness bar and NOT the racing belts because then it serves another purpose....stiffinening the chassis.
- the bar cannot be more than a 2 point attatchment TO THE CHASSIS.

NOTE: All the BK & Hardbar attatchments are "bolt in"

Both the BK and Hardbar have additional attatchments....but they are not to the chassis (frame).
So the bars can provide a stable attatchment and not Roll on the horizontal axis and then bind the belts on acceleration or deceleration...the bars have an antiroll system:
- Hardbar uses a belt that attatches to a bar between the seat mount/track bolts that attatch into the composite floor. This bar is used as an attatchment for the 6 point anti-Sub belt as well.
- BK uses a heim jointed spherical bushing down tube that attatches to these same outboard bolts of the seat mount.

Really "horse-a-piece" when comparing the 2 systems. Both work well. BK's is a little more positive (steel) whereas HardBar's may be a touch lighter, being Aluminum and having the belts instead of down tubes.. HardBar will also custom make the harness bar in CF if you so desire.

All this seems kind of ridiculous when in fact the previos paragraph of the rules allow 4 point Roll bars and even cages. The roll bars can ONLY be bolted in however. I guess the reasoning is you can have a 4 point Roll Bar which serves to stiffen the chassis, even though bolted in; as there is a weight penalty with it.

I recommend a harness bar (and racing belts) for the C%, C5 Z06 & C6.

Although harness bars are available for the C6 Z06 I do not recommend them.
Instead the Aluminum frame needs the improvements of at least a 4 point Roll Bar. I recommend welding Aluminum mounting plates to the Al frame and then bolting the Roll bar in.

Besure to consult the SCCA GCR's. Solo Regs and Time Trial Regs before fabricating.
