Although the bearing felt good, with no slopppiness, when I spun the tire the rotor rubbed on the brake caliper bracket indicating the bearing plane wasn't true. That's when I saw the fracture on the bearing flange.
This is exactly what happened to me at Willow (big) a week ago. Thank you so much Oli for the video and great explanation! My car is stock with Toyo R1s and therefore, it isn't raced. However, I instruct for several organizations and individuals and the car sees probably more hard track miles in a year, mostly at big Willow and Buttonwillow, than if I WERE racing it. Two years ago, my left rear hub broke and last week, the left front. Now I'll have them all changed periodically and hopefully, avoid having to have it towed home any more.

I wonder if shot peening would help? [I think cryo treatment would be bad for the bearings and sensors.] But areas like sensor plugs, bearing gaps, and wheel stud threads could be masked off before shot peening, and the flange would presumably be made more resistant to cracking.

Re: Broken C5 Hubs on the track - Add this check to your pre-race safety check

Well I was prepping the C5 Z06 for and upcoming 5-day event when I found some small cracks in the front left hub. I noticed that the hub felt a little stiff also and there appeared to be grease residue on the spindle. I wonder if the heat from the brakes and hard driving is cooking out the bearing lubricant? Once the lubricant is gone you would have the additional heat from friction that would really kill the hubs.

Any way thanks Oli for this thread and the link to iOffer for the replacement hubs. Definitly the best price around!!
