HPDE Basics

For those who have done a HPDE, the HPDE Checklist "Sticky" is for car and driver preparation for, during, and after a HPDE. Please share your experience to continue to improve the checklist.

This thread is for those who have not done a High Performance Driving Event (HPDE) or High Performance Driver Education (HPDE) or Driving School. If responses/questions warrant, I will develop a Frequently Asked Questions resource.

HPDE is an opportunity to take your car on the track in a structured schedule that includes classroom instruction and in-car instruction.

HPDE is NOT a racing school. No novice racing license is awarded by a HPDE.

HPDE is NOT Racing. Timing and Wheel 2 Wheel competion is not a part of HPDE. (yes, I know that data acquisition and timers are used by experienced drivers, once they progress to the point of being signed off for advanced/solo time or "seat time" ... USUALLY, there are at least two run groups that have instructors and at least one run group for advanced/solo drivers.

HPDE is NOT "Track Time" only ... it includes in-class and in-car instruction.
In MY OPINION "lead-follow" events are not HPDE events.

HPDE MAY NOT BE COVERED by your insurance policy - specific policy language differs - check yours! There is risk involved to you, your car, and to others when doing a track event.

for openers, there are three files here:
High Performance Driving School -- VIRginia Internation Raceway

First Timers at the Track

Preparing your car for a HPDE

"Boiling Point" - about brakes and heat and what to do to deal with heat.

This is entirely annecdotal, but I've heard that HPDE is the most fun you can have with your clothes on ...

See you at the track!

Re: HPDE Basics

Nice list Denny, thanks for posting it. I'm hoping to finally get out this fall and do some DEs to get my feet back under me on the track in preparation for running a full SCCA season in 2009 and going to the Runoffs next year.
