1. WELDING WARNING: Before any electric arc welding is done on the car you MUST physically disconnect the ECM/PCM. Simply disconnecting the battery is NOT sufficient.
2. The SCCA now requires ALL Showroon, Touring and Improved Touring cars (SS, T1, T2, & AS) registered after 1/1/03 must use DOM tubing regardless of vehicle weight.
The SCCA will not allow ERW tubing in ANY cars after 1/1/08.
DOM = Drawn Over mandrel
ERW = Electric Resistance Welded
I strongly recommend getting and reading a copy of the SCCA GCR's (General Competition Rules) prior to purchase and installation of a rollbar or cage.
The SCCA has specific requirements for tubing O.D., wall thickness, and inspection ports. Specs differ for weight and class of car.
For SCCA Solo II (Autocross), the requirements are somewhat different and there are different requirements between class as well as to "bolt in" or "weld in". These rules are included in a seperate (from GCR's) Solo II Rulebook.
NOTE: The SCCA has upgraded the rules for 2004 and has moved requirements for high speed SCCA Solo I (Time Trials and Hillclimb) closer to that of the Racing GCR's.
NHRA requirements may be different.
3. UPDATE: 3/1/05
The SCCA has updated their rollbar requirements and also updated their high speed Solo I Program.
4. UPDATE: 4/4/05
The Solo I program is now called Time Trials and includes 4 levels of competition (and 4 different levels of car preperation as it pertains to safety and roll bar/cage requirements).
The 4 levels of competition are:
- PDE (Professional Driving Event) entry level High Speed DE
- Club Trials (advanced driving Education)
- Time Trials
- Hillclimbs
The Rules and Administration have been moved from a Solo II (AutoX) atmosphere to a more demanding (as competition level increases) Club Racing atmosphere. The rules can be found on line at
www.scca.org
There are seperate
- Time Trial Rules which address
- Driver Safety Equipment
and reference the
- General Competition Rules including:
- GCR Section 18 - Roll Cages
- GCR Section 17 - Restraints
and also refer to Roll Bar and Roll Cage requirements in The Solo II Rule book as:
- Appendix C - Solo II Roll Bar Requirements
- Appendix J - Solo I Roll Bar Requirements
THe SCCA has provided all of these rules on line in PDF format at
www.scca.org
select either "Club Racing" or "Solo" in the left margin and then Click ON "Cars & Rules".
