Car industry sure does suck... I got laid off today.

Show up at work today on time (Checkered Flag Jaguar, Porsche, Audi)... go to logon to my computer and it says account not active. Just then my GM calls me and askes me to come into his office. I can tell instantly I'm getting canned by the look on his face. He had our service manager in there who is an attracitve woman simply as a witness. But of course "what the heck did I do" is running thorugh my head... did I tell an off-color joke, post anything out of line on the web representing the dealership? etc... nope none of that. I was simply RIF'd. Two other guys were let go today and it was done by seniority and I've only been there since March.

I walked away from a 3 year analyst position becuase I hated it and started selling Porsches... was great for a few months, but the past few have been horrible. I've been selling about 2 cars per month and making minimum wage.

Good thing is that I've been looking for jobs for 3 months and have 2 prospects that I should hear back from this week. Getting back into the project managment/analyst type of job.

Also, I'm only 27 and have been smart enough w/ my money to save for a situation like this. The cars are paid for and my ARM hasn't readjusted and won't until next fall so I have another year to wait for interest rates to bottom out and refi.

Car industry is really hurting.... even high-line. A few months ago they let many of the salaried employees go (receptionists, some admin, a few techs), but it must be getting bad to let comission only people go. On Sunday they also announced we'll no longer be open the 2 Sundays a month that we open and will be closing at 8pm every night vs. 9pm.

Kinda sucks... because I had some income and benefits, but not really unexpected.

Going out for some pool and beers w/ my buddies...

Cya,
Brian

That does suck. I think sales are down in most sectors right now.

Good luck with your 2 prospects.

Re: Car industry sure does suck... I got laid off today.

Brian:

9PM to 8PM simply reflects the time-savings for the few who are left, to hopefully ward off burn-out...and, of course, an hour/nite less electricity 'n such...

Commissioned people still co$t...employer portion of fringe benefits/fed. deductions...so when THAT ax falls, things must be p-r-e-t-t-y tight...

As to high-end cars suffering, the first things in a downturn to go are the not-strictly-necessary...planes, boats, non-daily drivers...

You can't tell when a billionaire is shopping at the Dollar Store, but you CAN tell when a "bum" goes to Neiman-Marcus...or, in your case, the Porsche Palace...

Best of Luck! One door closing means another will OPEN...

Re: Car industry sure does suck... I got laid off today.

^ Oh trust me I understand all of that. When they announced the hours changes on our Saturday AM meeting they spun it like a "we're looking out for you." thing, but anyone w/ any business sense knew they're just cutting costs.

Interestingly Audi is doing ver well. They're only down 3% accross the country where as most mfgs are 30-40% off.

Porsche is way off track... but I will say I have a whole new appreciation for them. The new 2009 911 w/ the PDK is incredible.

EDIT: BTW I'm voting for Obama now so he can take care of me

Brian,
Best of luck on a new job. Its a tough market out there but now is the time to seek out more training...many states offer job placement training programs. Im in Texas and they spent 6K on my MCSE course, paid 100 for each test, paid my daycare AND gave me gas money along with my unemployment checks....it was very nice and got me off in a new direction. Ever since that time I have always lived below my means hence the reason I do not have a C6 Z06 and live in a modest house....if my business closes I can get a crap job and still pay my bills.
It will work out....just another crappy chapter of life.
L8tr,
Jerry
