Z06 AL-X - Yes, thats another one.... BARBERS. Don't forget, the PIZZA DELIVERY guy. (Or gal). In the military, they charge $8.50 for haircuts and more often than none, I give them a $1.50 tip. Then, we are nearly REQUIRED to get a haircut once per week!!!! But why? They take 15 minutes to cut our hair, and if they do 4 per hour, that is more than we make as Soldiers. Go figure. And then if you TIP? That averages about $9.50 to $10.00 per cut. X 4 weeks = just about $40.00 per month. That is more than some women use to maintain their hair!!! So, we have to tip because they cut our hair? WHY? Because they "cut my hair good?" Thats their JOB! And if they cut it CRAPPY then they get fired. Thanks for reminding me. Valet, yeah, I can see that. Valet is a conveneince. Haircuts, bagging and a fast food drive thru are ridiculous, but because "society says" we feel OBLIGATED. Or because they sit that plastic see thru container visibly located where you feel th epressure. Maybe it is just me. But I think the "TIPPING" in this country is way out of control. Waiters/Waitresses, YES dependent on GOOD service. Not "ok" service. Again, if they do not like their job or they are just not good at it, they can go serve food at a fast food drive thru and hope to get tipped for standing there and handing out the bagged food. Or they can come work for the commissary. They seem to think bagging groceries is criteria enough for tipping. What's next? Wal-Mart? Target? Hell, in Germany, they don't even bag your groceries and the cashiers sit down in chairs...YOU have to bag your OWN stuff!!! Now that I think of it, I may as well tip the next police officer who pulls me over for doing his job too.
Barbers: I think it's different in your situation because you have to do it weekly. My barber is getting older and I don't see my barber doing anything else. I've been loyal to that barber shop for years and I do it because I want to. Years ago, I had a barber that ended up moving to another location and I was trying to find a replacement for him. Anyway, I went into this hair salon because I had nowhere else to go in that area and I was in need of a cut. That was the worst experience ever because this person had no skill and was rude. I didn't tip a single cent!
Pizza deliver guy: If he hurries, he gets a tip. Simple as that. I like my food delivered fast. If I don't have a positive experience, then I pick up myself. Just take out the middle man, right?
I really thought this thread was about something altogether different. Oops my bad. food to the car.
must say i named it that on purpose to give everybody a little laugh.
vant, my degree is in digital media, i do graphic design, photography, and some business consulting on the side. but since i live in abilene i don't get much business as its not that great of a town.
having said that all you good tippers should move here, the cops pretty much don't chase you ever. so that means less tickets.
and i agree with everyone that if the service is bad there should be no tip, but you have to remember most restaurants require the server to pay around a 3% tip out at the end of the shift. so this means that if i had $1000 in sales on friday, i pay $30 to be split among the hostess and the bus boys. so when you don't tip anything for mediocre service it COSTS money for the server to wait on you. you must also take into account that waiting on you isn't our only job, we have to keep the back of the restaurant stocked so that it keeps running. and most servers SUCK at that AND at waiting tables. so when you receive good service try to realize all the work they are doing behind the scenes too, and tip accordingly. also, when the food comes out a little wrong, like your steak isn't cooked correctly, remember I DIDN'T COOK YOUR FREAKIN MEAL! don't chew a server out for it, what do you want the server to do, cut into all of your food to make sure its correct before it comes out? (i'm not saying you guys do this, but it does happen)

oh and i'd like to add, church goers are the WORST tippers on average. i refuse to work on Sundays anymore. so if you'd like to represent for God and Religion in general (as the majority of restaurant staff doesn't attend a church) tip on sundays. It really hurts my faith in Christians (note, not in God) when they hand out a tract instead of a tip, especially when it looks like money, and then when you pick it up its not money but a tract. best way to reach a server is to hand them at least a decent tip and say something to the likes of "have a great day, God loves you". i mean, COME ON! the wealthiest group of people in the world can't spare some change for a struggling server?

Re: Eating Out
My daughter has been working part time at IHOP while she goes back to college. She tells me stories about how people use any excuse to stiff her. She waited on this one table and provided excellent service refilling customers glasses before they had to ask and then they complained to the manager when they left that she took to long to give them a bill. What people won't do to get out of giving a tip.
I usually give 15-20 percent if I get good service and 10% if not.

A Flow Bee? Hahahahahahaha Yes, makes the perfect Christmas Gift!
This afternoon I went to the commissary cause I was in desperate need of food. When I was checking out, the "BAGGER" was an elderly man, I would guess in his late 60s early 70s.
He was really slow on bagging so two other "kid" baggers (about 16 years old) came to help him bag my groceries. The groceries filled two small push carts that they use to transport groceries out to the cars, so as he pushed one and I pushed the other. When we got outside, we hit a 5-7% downhill that was about 50 feet in length and then ran back up on the other side the same 5-7% uphill. I looked over at him, smiled, and said "Wanna race?" His tired, wrinkled face gently smiled back and he gave his cart a slight push then jumped his two feet onto the back rail, leaned forward and rode the cart downhill like a little kid..... Since he got the jump on me, he beat me to the bottom and we shared a smile.
After he helped place groceries in my car, I tipped him $4.00 for just about 8 minutes of work. Why? Because although he may have been slow at bagging, his spirits were in it 100%.
I guess no matter who, where, or how I race, I am not meant to win.... But like any other race, I had fun doing it.

That goes to show you, sometimes you just feel good when you give someone something.
I had a girl at a cash register once ask me if I was giving her a tip... actually demanded one. What do you think she got? The nerve of some people.

Re: Eating Out
I tip 20% plus for good service and she better be cute
But for bad service I will still leave a 15% tip, but let me tell you the boss will know how shitty the service and/or the food was.
I like to cook and can create great meals so when I go out it better outdo anything I can make....so I do not go out much cause I am better than most fine restaurants.

Well I have to give huge props to anyone that works in a state that allows tip credit a part of their minimum wage. You really are working for your tips!!
I have been in this business for over 30 years and I can't tell you how much it kills me to look at some of our young staff and see them piss and moan about how little a specific table left for a tip, all while they're working at $8.00 per hour. So many have no idea what service really is, and feel they are entitled to 20% on every check.
It's really getting quite annoying to see "tip jars" popping up at any type of business. Try going to any a sporting event and paying $10 for a 16oz beer and the "bartender" automatically breaks the change on a $20 bill with small bills so that I'll have singles for a tip.
By the way, having to wait for the server to provide the check is one the things that I find most annoying. I have always trained my staff that customers are always waiting on us to provide service throughout their whole experience while dining. The check should always be dropped shortly after the guest's table is cleared as some are completing their meals. Let them know you'll be back to check on their interest for dessert but in case they are in a hurry they won't be delayed. The check can always be picked up to add another round of drinks or dessert.
