My buddy of 14 years just got picked up for SFC/E7 and said SCREW THAT, I AM GETTING OUT! So, he just retired as an E-6 and got a job with L3 just about 2 months ago.
In less than 2 months of being retired, he found a house to rent and just moved in about 2 weeks ago. Today, he tells me he is off to Afghanistan for 4 months on Monday.
Bad news? To some, yes......
To him? Not really. He will be on a secured Air Base making $2300 per WEEK INCENTIVE PAY on top of his monthly salary.
WTF!!!!!??????? $2300 PER WEEK!!!!?????
That's $9200 incentive pay for 4 months chill status duty on TOP of his normal salary. That's friggen ridiculous. I need to get the HELL OUT!!!! And the Army wonders WHY they CANT keep people in? Because the PAY IS CRAP!!!
My buddy will be doing the same exact thing as he was doing IN THE ARMY, except, without a uniform and making about $10,500 MORE per month than he did as a Soldier. And they wonder WHY???
His acceptance of SFC/E-7 promotion woul dhave ONLY yield him $300 more pay per month and he woul dhav ebeen obligated for another 24 months. $300 x 24 months = $7200. He will make that up in one single month of work.
Sometimes, I think I am in the wrong business.....

It depends on your perspective. I retired after 25 years military service. Yes, the pay was crap and the retirement is crap too at only about $30,000 a year. Now I'm making well over $100,000 a year and I hate it. The people I work with are lazy ass idiots that don't give a hoot about anything other than burning hours working toward retirement. The time I spent in the military was great! I wouldn't trade the experiences and the work I did for any amount of money. The people I work with now think I'm an idiot because I don't suck ass and play their politics, whatever. At least I have a conscience, morals, and work ethic.
Do what you want to do. If you think you can make more money somewhere else go ahead and do it. If the you make a move and the grass isn't greener, know that you've heard it before.
Good luck in all your endeavors and thanks for your service,
i think we'd rather keep you around here and broke than lose you to an IED
chasin the money isn't always the smartest thing..
make good choices !!!

You are both correct. Money isn't always the means and "WHAT IF" something happens. I love the Army - And I think it is the best thing that has ever happened for me, but there are times where regardless of grass on the other side, I want to be on the OTHER side. Discipline, standards, respect are something of the past in today's military. I have to see the CSM today for some BS some SGT/E5 wrote him in an E mail. It was the "Thats not my job" Sergeant and all this started because the Executive Officer sent her a "Get me that information now!" E mail and somehow, I think she, in all her wisdom, thought I generated that order. Imagine that, I ordered a MAJ to get me information...So she wrote the CSM an E mail saying that I am trying to make her do MY Job. When in fact, she is mor eor less trying to dodge her own responsibility for a complete and accurate document.
She obviously has lost all sense of her mind to start this crap because now I have an opportunity to go full blast with the CSM and lay it all out. Her attitude, her deportment, her lack of respect, insubordination etc. And then, what HE does will be a determining factor on MY morale as well as an indicator how she got this far with no reprimand.
Its not the same Army is used to be. You feel you need to JUSTIFY an ass-chewing or submit a Memorandum for Record requesting permission to put a subordinate in their place.
Not the Army I know. But I try and make it better than the way I found it. Or, in this case, the way it was passed on to me. Garbage!
As a contractor, I was always glad to see a "Uniform" show up to take a leadership role in whatever project I was involved with. I knew the BS would stop and we could get on with the real work. I guess that is not as sure a thing as it used to be. It is sad to see the "political correctness" seeping into our military. Soon they'll be arming Marines and Army Infantry with soft rubber bullets so they don't offend anyone.

Glenn,
I have heard this from Air Force guys too!!
These guys equate it to the mom that spanks her kid in the grocery store!
Back then, if the kid was acting like a brat, the parent was expected to correct the situation!!
Now, if you smack the kid on the ass, you have 20 cell phone photos of you beating a poor defenseless child sent to family services with the police report!
That and basic supplies. You can requisition bullets, but heaven forbit you want pencils and paper!!

Re: I am in the wrong business
The only thing I will add to the above is depends on YOUR situation.
How much more time till military retirement?
Any promotions on the horizon before retirement?
Could you get a job similar to your mos/experience with a contractor for decent pay?
Willing to relocate? East Coast/Beltway Bandits
The day I retired from civil service I could have started the next day with 1 -3 government contractors doing the same thing I had been doing. I wanted to retire, not go back to work even though the money would have been sweet with my retirement pay to boot.

Sounds just like nuclear power, fun in the Navy, better pay in civilian life, but now the fun is gone. Just another job. Nearing retirement and contractors are willing to throw CRAZY money at you for 4-6 weeks' work spring and fall for refueling outages across the country!! I just want to play with toys and drink beer...
