Old gas filling stations ...

Remember these days? Remember gas less than 50 cents per gallon? Did you ever jump on the bell hose?

Ah, what memories! I do remember gas costing about 27 cents but the pumps with the glass containers were a little before my time.

There was a time when I guy would come out and actually fill your tank, check your oil and wash your windshield at no extra charge.

And they would have gas wars, have give aways like dinner plates, coffee cups little tiger tails you could hang from your gas cap or trunk. The employees would wear uniforms with the company logo on them. Ahh, we will never see that again.

Nice pictures.

Great pics Steve. The glass ones were before my time and never did see any of them. But I do remember gas at .27 cents a gallon and there was a Sunoco station around the corner that looked like one in your pics. Sunoco 260 was the ticket back in those days.

And yes, I did jump on the bell hose.

Re: Old gas filling stations ...

I was doing full service at a gas station at the ripe old age of 12

It reminded of things like my belt mounted change dispenser and the 106 octane leaded pump we had. Regular leaded was around 0.50 a gallon then.

Re: Old gas filling stations ...

I worked at a Sunnoco...we would signal one another when a good looking girl came in and take turns cleaning the windshields. Gas was .24 per gallon and we did the car repairs in the garage. I remember one of the auto fillers on the nozzel sticking and pouring the whole place with gas. We were trying to hose it all down before it went up in flames. Gas was cheap and everyone had a Hot-Rod.

Re: Old gas filling stations ...

Hey, I have two old pumps on display in my house an old Tohkeim with sight glass and globe exactly like the ones in the Texaco photo) and one exactly like the one in the next photo (Marathon) that I've been trying to complete the restoration on for the past 17 years.
