What your favorite Internal Combustion Engine,, and why?
When I was a kid, I used to get my Hondas & parts at Bud Ekins m/c in the SFV.
He had a fantastic collection of restored and somewhat current at the time unique motorcycles.
Honda made some exotic 125cc 5 cylinder racing engines, the Brits had the unique Ariel square four.
It all facinated me when I was in my early teens.
But as favorites, I'd have to say the Chevy small blocks and DD 71's almost take the cake.

I would have to say the 396 or 427 L88. Back in the day, my brother and I had a 55 chevy with a 427 L88 stuffed into it. The why part is easy... lots of HP/TQ stock from the factory.

I like anything with high hp per liter, good shifting, and light weight.
Pretty much any sport bike or motoX motorcycle engine fits that criteria.
Our engines are ok in the torque per liter category, but the hp/ltr is low because of low rpm limits, and the transmissions suck. Although they're good compared to regular street cars I wouldn't even put them in the same category as a sport motorcycle engine.

Probably the ZL1. I lusted after it, but it was too scarce. I remember a cartoon in a car mag with a guy carrying a big block engine on his shoulder. The other guy asked him "what's so special about your new racing engine?"
Another one would be the Cosworth engines responsible for so many racing victories.

The rotary wankel engine as refined ove the the last 30+ years by Mazda. Since they solved the problems years ago with the rotor apex seals it is a incredible engine. The simplicity of design and the compactness of the engine for the amount of horsepower it makes are very impressive to me.
Well, I'll put my flame suit on first.
I strayed from the GM brand in 2004 and purchased a Dodge 3/4 ton Quad Cab with the Cummins 5.9L six cylinder turbo diesel. I really like this engine: stock hp was 325hp and peak torque was 600 ft. lbs. at only 1600 rpm. (The newer Dodge, Ford and GM diesels all have at least 350hp and about 650 ft. lbs).
Heck, how could a person go wrong with the industrial Cummins 5.9L with it having over 17 to 1 static compression and stock turbo boosting to near 30 psi? Yep, it's a solid iron boat anchor weighing over 1100 lbs but even modded it's exceded my expectations.
I was infected with the mod bug and added a couple of fueling boxes, air and exhaust improvements as well as a bigger turbo and presto the 7000lb truck moves out right smartly. The new turbo is currently wastegated at 50 psi which the powers to be say is safe on the stock head gasket without ARP headstuds. Remember these aren't rpm motors they are torque engines and are actually fun to drive although my Z06 is in another universe altogether.
Flame suit on, turn the heat up!!!
