This photo kicks ass.

Article translated:

Thought this would be interesting to you all.
Scanned from a recent issue of "Bilmagasinet" - danish car mag.
Interview with Jan Magnussen about (among other things) his record lap at NBR.
Here´s a translation:

[Top pic, Magnussen and Vette:]
Thursday morning, Southern Germany. General Motors have discreetly rented the legendary german Nürburgring track for an hour between 7 and 8 in the morning.
The temperature is more comfortable than at Le Mans, and the track is empty apart from a couple of early rising spy photographers.
It takes more than a blue Vette to exite them - they recognize it, it´s the Z06 version, the brutal Vette with 500 BHP. What they do not know, is that it´s Jan Magnussen behind the wheel.
The objective is to beat Walther Rörhl´s laptime in a Porsce GT3 RS - it´s 7:43,0 min for the 20,8 km heavily varied track with 73 corners.
The record was set in 2004 in a standard version of the Porsche.

[Splash in middle]
Jan made 7:42,9 thereby beating the Porsche GT3 RS by 0,1 sec.

[Two lower photos]
"The photo is taken at Flugplatz. I´m going 240-250 km/h at full throttle in 4th gear and the car is actually jumping twice: After the first jump it lands so hard that it takes off again, as you can see in the second picture. As it lands the second time I have to take a sharp right immediately after.
The car is a standard car with street setup - had it been my racer it would hardly have left the tarmac. At NBR the street car reaches 295 km/h on the long straight in 5th gear (6th gear is an overgear for saving gasoline). At NBR there are no run-off areas like other tracks,. You simply have to stay on the track. When you are halfway around the 20 km, you think it´s a good thing there are only half as many places left you risk running off the track" Jan says.

[About the track and the car]
"The stree Corbette has virtually no grip compared to my race car which has a large rear spoiler. But it does have almost as many BHPs as my Le Mans racer and is almost as fast. The rev limiter sets in at 7000 rpms, and it does have more than 500 BHPs.
It´s fast.At the record attempt I drove 2 x 2 laps with a cooldown lap inbetween for both mine and the car´s sake.
I couldn´t have driven one single lap more. I wouldn´t have liked to drive a single meter (3 feet) more with myself at the wheel at that speed", Jan finishes.

Again all credit to the original poster and scanner.
Thanks

I wish they would have put in a 8000 RPM tachometer range. One of the first things I'd do is raise that cut off point about 500 RPM to avoid cutting out. Maybe they will make a change in 2007. :usa:

I am surprised nobody has pointed out the REAL time for the C6 Z. It is 7:42.9, not 7:43. Hey, I know it isn't a big difference, but the fact that it has hit a 7:42.x has more bragging right in itself than 7:43. It also has a better ring to it. :yeadog:

This car is AMAZING!! And to think the SRT-10 has crossed my mind here and there..shame on me.. :mah:

That much air had to cost a lot of time. Tires in the air don't put much power to the ground. and at 135-140mph, drag would have slowed the car significantly without power to the ground.

The time is fast, but the driver--a former F1 driver and one of the world's top sports car drivers--says it was BTW and these pictures seem more Joie Chitwood than Michael Schumacher...maybe the chassis isn't that well tuned.

Oh, and one more thing..if this car got a 7:42.9 and it was in the air half the time (lol, not literally) imagine if it had better downforce and was able to complete the ring being implanted on the ground the ENTIRE time, along with non-run flats. Think it would have broken into the 7:39.x?

And another thing..Sure this picture is awesome and exciting, but how exciting is it really if the car can't stay on the ground at very high speeds due to a lack of downforce? :eek:o:

I guess I will have to remember to not go over humps at 130 mph with this car..

Its common to get air at the Flugplatz section of the Nordschleife, even for full-on race cars. Flugplatz translated is "airfield".

We all know that getting air is not good for the final timing, but these are the greatest pics I have seen so far.
These pics just scream excitement to me, not to mention other words that come to mind like:

Holy Sh!t
Oh my god
WTF
I think I just wet myself
I think Jan just wet himself
I know the competition just wet themselves.

If you saw that car coming up in your rear view mirror you would swear it was a demon possessed coming up after you.

I think that the front looks more like a devilish grin :sneaky:
Rather than a happy face.

I really envy you guys with your Z's.
And I really envy you guys getting a hold of this one.

This car is going to be a scream.

See, I wish GM would put such a spoiler on the street version. I don't give a crap how fast the car goes, I want lots and lots of downforce for good cornering.
i think they dont add very much down force because of gas mileage reasons.

I'm not too up on Porsches, but I looked up the GT3 on edmunds, and for 2005 it is given as 345 HP, 3043 lbs, $99K dollars list. (The GT2 is around $190K).

Now it's quite impressive that the new Z beat a $100K+ car, but that Porsche must have a *damned* good suspension if with 345 HP it's able to lap as fast as a 500 HP car that only weighs a little more. I know Porsches do have awesome suspensions, but I'm surprised it's that close.

**EDIT** - I see there are two types of GT3 - the plain one, and RS. I don't know the diff, but presumably the RS is more expensive. Even the plain GT3 seems to do quite credibly given it's fairly low HP rating: 7.49 on the ring, which is better than the C5Z.

I think you are right.

There's always the adjustable route, where you can pick between downforce, for racing, and low drag for highway cruising.

Or just leave it off the base model, and deal with the hit on the Z.

Seems like we're getting close to the limits of what streetable tires will do without more downforce added to the mix.

My understanding is that this car was running street tires and those tires are some sort of run flat. Just think of what it would clock with a good set of race tires. Maybe install a small spoiler and we are talking a huge WOW in the fun factor column. Those two mods and this machine could make some of us Superman. I figure replacement rubber will displace the top position on the mod list.

I am not a Porche specialist, however the American spec GT3 has 385 HP, and the RS is a special European version, might be lightened?

I am sure that Dock would know.
