Pit Road Exclusive Feature Corvette Artistry: Tony's Corvette Shop Author: Jared Cuneo (JC) - 9/22/2001
Tony's Corvette Shop is a full service shop for complete restoration, performance upgrades, maintenance, and
also houses a Collector Car Museum where they sell stunning examples of vintage Corvettes, and other classics.Click here to see an intro video. Click here to see the overview with Keith. Click here to see the Collector Car Museum. Videos created by Z06Vette.com Well folks, Z06Vette.com just got back from Tony's Corvette Shop in Gaithersburg, Maryland and what an
experience! I have to admit that I was a little miffed about having to wait almost a month to get an
appointment (maybe due to requesting the interview) but after today's trip to the shop all I can tell you
is that if they say you have to wait 6 months, WAIT. I have never seen a shop put so much effort into a
customers car, ever. Whether you have a 63 SWC or a 90's daily driver, rest assured that Tony's will treat
your car with the utmost care.
We started off by being late after an accident on the beltway but upon reaching the shop we were greeted by Carol, the shops Administrative Assistant who quickly introduced us to Keith, a parter in the business.
I won't get too much into bios as all of this information can be found on their site with much more detail than we can provide here, but Keith is responsible for quite a number of jobs including Parts Manager, Customer Service and a host of other daily tasks. We were sorry that we could not meet Tony but he was out researching parts for a restoration they had ongoing. That's ok because we plan to be visiting often! Other team members included Eddie, who has spent 27 years working on Corvettes, Lotus, and Lamborgini's.
Andrew who specializes in all-phases of 53-84 restorations, and Jose, who also has extensive Corvette
experience. Again, we cannot even begin to list their accomplishments in this brief article, please see the
site to find out more what these gentlemen are capable of doing with your Vette.
We began the tour of the shop by examining their facilities and I have to say it was one of the cleanest and
well-kept examples of a Corvette garage as we have ever seen. Floors were spotless, it was well-lit and
ventilated, and enough tools to make a Snap-On rep extremely happy :) Racks were new, and were outfitted
to be especially gentle to our C5's, a nice touch.
Moving to a rear area, we found a special car undergoing restoration, the #44 Corvette. While it was only a shell of the car it once was, one could only imagine the hands of workers and early engineers crafting this beauty almost 50 years ago which at the time had an uncertain fate. Seeing this car made us very happy that the General stayed the course and that Tony's was in the process on giving it new life. We looked at several cars which were getting the full treatment, all of which we perfect in every way;
flawless paint, even seams, just perfect, down to the last detail, and whether you're restoring a solid-axle
car or just doing an oil change, its the details that count.
Tony's can handle anything you can throw at them, from lube, oil, and filter to installing a new intake on a Z06 to fully restoring your vintage Vette. They have truly mastered the art of perfecting an American icon. On another note, one of the hardest tasks in buying a quality older model Vette is actually identifying the
*level* of quality. Well, we were surprised to learn that Tony's can help here too. They also run a
Collector Car Museum where a buyer can choose from a host of excellent quality collector Corvettes.
Since Tony's only buys cars they know and doesn't just buy cars from unknown sources, you can be sure
that the history of each car they sell is clean and well documented. We found some stunning examples of
some very desirable collector Corvettes, including a LS-6 equipped Stingray which was Bloomington Gold and
NCRS Top Flight (like most of their cars) certified. What was even more shocking was the prices, they were
actually priced what the car was worth...imagine that! Exceptional quality cars at very reasonable prices,
what more can you ask for?
While we were there, Eddie installed a set of Corsa Indy's on the Z06Vette.com mobile and by now, I don't
think I even have to get into the details with you. Suffice to say, the work was done perfectly and very
quickly I might add. Bolts were torqued with a real honest to goodness torque wrench, too bad even the
dealers (most of them, anyway) neglect this important detail.
Well, we're gonna cut this short by saying that if you live anywhere near Maryland, you owe it to your Corvette
to visit Tony's Corvette Shop, a mere article cannot do it justice...One trip and you'll never go anywhere else...and you can take that to the bank.
Stay tuned, we plan on returning to Tony's for a follow up on this feature and getting our Baer rotors, pads, and tires installed in the near future...For now, check out all of the pictures below and give Tony's a call to see how they can help with your next project. Pictures:
