It's Dead

Hi guys,

It is with great sorrow, and a fair amount of anger, that I must announce that my once-gorgeous 2001 Z06 got killed, while I was stopped at an intersection, by an 87 year-old man who wasn't paying attention and never slowed down. I was about 10 feet behind a GMC Yukon and he hit me so hard that he pushed me under the Yukon. I took a pretty good beating....I don't remember anything after the accident, I still have really bad headaches, my vision goes blurry every once in a while and the ringing in my ears won't go away.

Hopefully I can get another one, one day, but for right now I need to heal and settle with the insurance company, but it's using base model Vettes for comparison, and I'm trying to explain to them that it's apples and oranges.

Here are the pics.

Re: It's Dead

Typical of the insurance company trying to settle for less. Because the Z06 didn't have a specific model number built into to serial number you will have to educate them. Tell them the 8th digit is the engine code and that designates your car as a 385hp Z06. After that ask them what guide are they using for valuation? Kelly Bluebook, NADA etc. I like to use Manheim Market Reports. They run hundreds of auctions around the US and you can plug in mileage and condition so you can get an accurate retail value. By the way the insurance companies don't like MMR because it favors you the customer not them. I don't know what you think your car is worth but the MMR give it a retail value between 15-20K depending on condition. Good luck hope you feel better.

Bruno, the car still had a hint of new car smell, when you got in it. There were no flaws inside or out. I had the value tagged at $20K; insurance started at $15K and are now at $18K, but they're still using two base models to compare value, so I'm going to resume discussions after Christmas.

Thanks for telling me about Manheim Market Reports. I had forgotten about them, another product of the concussion.

Merry Christmas and thanks again.

Sorry to hear. Driving these days is a hazard considering all the old codgers and people being distracted by cell phones. No wonder insurance is so exspensive.

I was diagnosed with a concussion, whiplash and lower back sprain. The concussion ended up being a bit worse than initially thought...I'm having memory issues, particularly with my words. I've had a headache and ringing in my ears that haven't gone away, since the accident. The seat belt did a number on my shoulder too, but given that I always ratcheted the belt, and then moved the seat forward before driving, the car did its job well, and I'm happy that the damage to my body was minimized.

I quit my claim w/ my insurance company, after finding out that using my own company affects my insurance rating, and started a claim with the other guy’s insurance...State Farm. Safeco, my company, had the Z06 for almost three weeks, was only willing to pay $18,590.28 for the Z06; State Farm, after having it for two days, offered me $23,240.98, direct deposit into my acct by next Tuesday.

I’m getting rid of Safeco.

Re: It's Dead

Sorry to hear that you still have the lingering issue's with the concussion. But on the flip side you got a fair settlement from the other guy's insurance company. Now hopefully they will take cars of all of you medical issue's. You are obviously going to need to wait for some time to pass before you sign off with State Farm on your medical bills present and future.

Truthfully I don’t know. Right now I still need to continue my physical therapy. If I do get another Vette, I’d really like to track down my first one, a ‘79 L-82.

My late wife’s father bought it new, and I sold it after our 2nd kiddo was born. VIN 1Z8749S418330.

I ended up going with the old man’s insurance company; I received $23,240 in the end. Now I’m just trying to deal with the physical part of it. My rotator cuff is torn in two spots, I have constant headaches and ringing in my ears. I see the ortho on Tuesday for a surgery date, after months of ineffective physical therapy.
