Steering Rack Boot/pipes routing?

Hi,
my driver side steering rack boot is ruptured, by the high pressure pipe. (See picture)

It looks like it's wrongly routed, insted of in front of it should go behind (towards the back of the car) in order to clear the dust boot!?

It's one of thos PITA locations to access so any ideas before attempting to replace the boot itself?

If I disconnet tyhe pipe and move it back ... the challenge will be to reconnect it to the rack head again

All the best

Sorry for the picture orientation but you'll get what I mean.

Re: Steering Rack Boot/pipes routing?

Cannot tell with those small pictures, your eyesight is best to decide when looking at this which is best

You may find it easier to loosed the steering rack mounting bolts ( or lower the left side) so it drops down and makes more space to get the lines on or off
as you do not want to cross thread or have loose brake line fittings not tight enough

When done you might want to consider to do a wheel alignment.

Thanks for quick response!
I went back to the Service manual again and !! looking at page ”15-115” it looks like the routing is different from what I see in my car.

The pipe going into the top of the ”Variable Effort Steering Actuator” actually goes outside of the two other pipes?

Probably done on the assembly line during the last ours before the weekend

I’ll follow your advice and take a closer look today.

Re: Steering Rack Boot/pipes routing?

Or was the CAM changed ?
If so the rack would have to been dropped to get to the crank pulley bolt

In any case sounds like whoever put the rack on got the lines out of proper position as easier to do those lines with rack lowered

If you do lower rack you also have to remove mounting bolts for power steering unit to allow the left side to drop down
