I heard a $1000 deposit?
Alos is the MSRP the same and are dealers currently selling them at MSRP?
I'm in the southeast if that makes a difference in cost, not in wack cali!

Hey uneda,
Just my wacko California opinion. A $1000 downpayment is about right. By shopping around it's possible to find a deal somewhat under MSRP. You can order for courtesy drop to a dealer near you. The key is to find a dealer who has allocations to order Z06s. Also, write a contract with the dealer stating you get your deposit back if the order isn't placed and accepted by GM by a specific date. Make your down payment by credit card so you have some power if the dealer doesn't deliver. jerboa /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

jerboa makes a good point. "Some" dealers just might accept a deposit and fail to deliver the car as agreed by a "promised" delivery date later. If you wind up cancelling the order, they have to refund your deposit. But how soon, might not be to your liking. It is always a good idea to have everything in writing so you have at least some legal recourse to force them to honor their commitment and actually do what they said they would do.

I hate to make this topic into a "us against them" situation, but we all know, salesmen often can be of rather dubious integrity.

As for buying MSRP in "whacky" California, not from any dealer I have visited in the Northern part of the State in large metro areas like SF or Sacramento. Dealers here are all conspiring to mark up way over the sticker and "claiming" to be able to get their "asking" price without difficulty.

Frankly, I don't believe it, but there just might be enough fat cat buyers still running around to make them "think" they can get it in certain affluent areas. So for now they will not budge on price. ;-(

I shopped extensively out of state to find a better deal and eventually did. Call Craig Hanson at Bernard Chevy at 847-362-1400 and tell him I referred you on a 2002 Z06. You may be pleasantly surprised for what you get off MSRP, so what does it hurt to make one phone call to find out.

Expect to pre-pay a $1000 deposit to order a
car thru any dealer. Anymore than that and
something should seem suspicious.

Also, from what I've heard, we can expect the MSRP to go up over 2001. I believe the
price adjustment will be $1,500 more on the sticker price for a 2002 Z06.

I've got $1000 down at my local dealer on a Yellow 2002 Z06. I am still waiting for my official order number though. I called several out of state dealers prior to placing the order and just couldn't do better than MSRP on an '02. On an '01, I was able to get 4K off sticker from two dealers. My guess is, if you wait until this winter or next spring, you'll be able to get around 4K off the '02.

FYI here is the MSRP pricing on the 2002 Corvette, about $1500 more for the Z06:

While I agree that one should get everything down in writing, I did'nt see any mention of that including the preagreed on price with regard to MSRP. I have heard bait and switch claims from dealers in the past relative to all sorts of cost adjustments. Assuming the written contract will be prepared by the dealer for your signature, be sure it addresses all of your concerns before signing.

Certainly there are always dealers who take advantage of the market. Some will deal under MSRP depending on the location, allocation and ethics while others may not due to the desire to make a killing.
This year is a little different than last year. Back in April/May of 2000, many dealers didn't even know what a Z06 was, let alone what they could sell them for. I started my negotiations then. The details were sketchy but I got the dealer to commit to $500 below MSRP, which he honored when we could finally place the order into the system. However, it wasn't long after that dealers, even the one that I bought my car from, were adding $5K or more on the price and getting it with no questions. Once the car was on the streets and the fans saw them, the fever ran hot. Dealers knew that they had something special and many took advantage. The dealer where I bought mine called me 2 weeks after I took delivery and asked me, jokingly I thought at first, if I wanted to make a quick $3K. After we both quit laughing, he said he was serious. Of course the attention the car was getting was worth way more than $3K. You guys that also got yours in the first few months know what I mean about the attention.
I remember a co-worker in San Jose telling me that dealers in his area were getting $60K and up back in September. While at the same time some dealers in Florida were selling them for MSRP and would deliver for you anywhere.
If your local dealer is not willing to deal at MSRP, just look on the internet. There are many that will give you a good deal.
Good luck to all of you guys and gals that are waiting for your Z06. Although the wait seems torturous now, you will forget about it when you fire up that wonderful LS6 for the first time. Enjoy the ride, I am!

A deposit of $1,000 should be enough in almost all of the dealers. I also have a contract with the dealer, after the fiasco that I had last year with ordering a Corvette I am making a contract mandatory with every new car I order from now on. Youshuld be able to get it for MSRP or a little bit less. Happy hunting.

I am sick of all you guys whinning about the dealer makes to much money or they are trying to rip us off. why don't you complain about the 300% or more mark up on furnuture or jewlery. I dont know where you guys buy your cars but its funny you think there going to steal your deposit. give me a break. i am a car salesman and proud of it. you have the choice to pay the price or go some place else, is that so hard. we sell are vettes at msrp but if another dealer sells them for more and someone will pay it then so be it. Its called supply and demand. I was just wondering in these contracts all you are getting do you put in there that if you find a better deal you will back out. In my 2 years of selling cars i have come across more lying buyers then sales people there is even a joke "buyers are liers" when I first started there I didn't know what it meant i sure do know. so before you start slamming on dealerships and salesman you better look in the mirror. I hear some of you say i placed my order but if i get a better deal i will cancel it and buy that one. well what if you placed your order and we could sell it for more to someone else do we. no we honor it. sometimes you guys make me sick. Another thing while i am at it when i come up to you on the lot more then half of you are rude, if i go up and ask you for help you are mad if no one ask you for help you are mad and run to the manager and tell them you been there for an hour and no one is helping me,you guys make me sick. tom

Wow bluefox, you must be having a Bad Hair Day. You do have some good points, and I do hope your blowing off steam here will protect the next customer you see.

I don't know about other guys, but every time I have bought a car, I followed thru on the deal, and everytime I bought a car, something was either not quite like it was presented, or something came up that they "forgot" to mention. So I guess that I'm saying the buyer should be careful, and you are saying the seller should be careful. OK with me.

"Buyer's are liars" hehe...

The retail side of car sales is tough.

The problem with car sales is it is adversarial. It's adversarial because it's a negotiated deal.

I won't go into a long speil here. Nobody really cares.

All involved should be aware that a Corvette is a "heart buy". All about emotion.

Vette buyers come in sold already and too many eager salesman try to "sell" the car. Keep this in mind, It's a two minute sale and a three hour delivery.

I haven't stood on the "point" in years, however;... I can tell both sides of a negotiated car deal that the customer wants to buy and the seller wants to sell.

When either side tries to make it harder than it should be is when the trouble starts.

You are probably right. There are a lot of a**holes and/or jerks out there buying cars. However, there's a ton of super polite, nice, eager buyers too. You just got to grin and bear it and have fun selling. When the fun stops...it's time to move on down the road..

good luck

Well, it happened to me. The dealership took my 01' Torch Red Coupe with Torch Red interior, and sold to somebody else. How do I know this, it took more than twenty weeks for them to tell me that the car was on its way from Bowing Green. Correct me if I'm wrong but, delivery for a Corvette usually takes 6-8 weeks. This color combination was really high in demand along with MY, so these colors were always at MSRP or above. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif

I'm from CA and the prices here are outrageous! I put in a deposit for a 2002 which states if the dealer does not get an allocation or cannot deliver a Z06 with my preferences, the deal is off. The offer is also at MSRP. I received a lot of gripe on the C5-Corvette.com forum about paying MSRP (they thought I was a dealer!) but I've already got the money earmarked and I'm ready to own one of these bad boys. I just need to dump my 71 Chevelle SS!

Tom, being in new car sales is a tough job. The only other "sales" job I know of that is really a tough job, even harder than yours, is recruiting for the Armed Forces (been there, done that, but never again).

I can only say that my experience with Chevy dealers here in California has been really terrible. Again, as I've said before, the
"average" salesman adds absolutely no value to the sale, especially Corvettes. They don't know much about them, nor do they have any real authority to "make a deal" and in effect are doormats to the dealership. That may sound harsh, but I firmly believe this to be true for the majority of people in sales people in the car business.

You must realize that expecting a "working class" person to fork over $50,000 for a car, ANY CAR, is quite traumatic financially speaking. This may explain why people give you such a hard time. It's because they are already having a hard time all of their own.

Even though I can afford to buy a Z06, the average guy has to take an incredible amount of crap from their wifes who would in fact rather have expensive jewelry or house full of new furniture, or at the very least, a new car with a back seat, four doors, and probably made in Japan because it gets better gas mileage.

It's so bad for me, I won't even take my wife with me to the dealership. It's just too humbling to be around here and a new Corvette at the same time.

I've owned three new ones over the years and nearly wound up in divorce court over each one purchased.

Now how's that for whinning about buying a new Corvette? /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

I am quilty of many things you say. I do give salesman a pretty hard time and I pride myself on being a tough negotiator. But the one thing that bugs me the most ... dare I say it again ... the average car salesman does not really do anything to add value.

To wit, in EVERY case during my numerous trips to local Chevy dealers here in the SF Bay Area, not one had a clue what was coming in 2002. It is NOT my job to know about cars, but I found out everything about the Z06 in a few hours of researching on the Internet, (like this forum), so why can't a
"professional" selling Corvettes do the same? If they did their homework, then perhaps they can "add value".

I kept asking the sales people at those local dealerships, if I could order a 2002 Z06, and all they said was NO, we don't know when we'll be getting any to sell. Say what? Why don't they know. If "I" was in their position, "I" would make it may business to know that and everything else so I am prepared to do business with a potential customer.

In every case, the dealer's sales manager ultimately intervened on the sales person behalf and dodged the question I was asking by telling me I should buy a 2001 for $5,000 over sticker and be glad that I did. I'm sorry, but that is an insult to me. Not only do they want me to bend over and get
_ucked, but they won't even sell me what I specifically want to buy.

This smacks of slimmy car sales people just wanting to make a quick buck, but not just a few 100 dollars, not even a few 1000, but more like 10,000 or more for being arrogant assholes.

Tom, even at MSRP, as you well know, the dealership is making around $8000 on every Corvette they sell. Meanwhile Joe Shmoo Chevy truck buyer gets a "great deal" for $5000 off sticker or John Q. Public Chevy car buyer gets to finance a Cavalier family car for 0.9%.

Corvette buyers, since the C5 came out five
years ago, IMO have been paying very high markups to the vast majority of dealers who see the new Corvette market as an their big opportunity to be GREEDY, plain and simple.

I recently tried to buy a "used" Z06 with over 2,000 miles from a new car Chevy dealer. After hours of pointless haggling the "best deal" I could get the dealer to agree to was still $2000 over the original MSRP. Once again, I was being told to bend over and just get _ucked.

BTW, haven't you car salesman heard? The economy is still in the toilet, so just how long do you will still be selling at $5k over sticker? Even sticker deals will soon become a thing of the past if the economy doesn't rebound soon.

With Z06 production going up to 20% of the total number of Corvette produced, it should be rather obvious that there just ain't that many buyers out there that can afford to pay $50,000 for a car, even great cars like the Z06.

If you weren't in the business of selling cars, and had to pay full sticker for your '02, or higher, how would you feel?
I dare say you'd feel like us and not so fond of bending over every time you see a new Corvette for sale.

Obviously, I greatly resent your post, and I don't care if you're sick of Corvette buyers who give salesman a hard time, but I hope you can see this issue from the other side too. Without all the lying bastard new car buyers out there, you'd starve or simply have to find a different line of work.

Geez, I must have the dealer from heaven. We do everything over the phone. He is very knowledgeable and has the car delivered right to my door. I never get gouged. Unfortunately I did have to pay list for the 98 vert, as they profusely apologized that they had to charge me list. Last couple of deals have been very fair.

They only get about a dozen Corvettes a year !

It's funny you should mention being sick of customers.
I'm sick of you sleeze ball car salesman!
That's a great coincidence!
You guys have no concept of sales. You think that customers should just take it in the @$$. I'm sure I could tell you where to go, but your'e probably already there!
GIVE ME A BREAK!
Maybe if you guys added some value to the sale I could understand...
