02 Z vs Viper...

2660 Views 38 Replies 19 Participants Last post by  EZ2XLR8
Do you think the 02 Z can take the Viper now? I read from many other posts that many 01s owners had taken on the Vipers, and its all boiled down to the driver. The better driver will win. But, do you think the 02s Z will definitely beat the Viper with the 20 extra HPs?

BTW, I just got to get myself out of the Junior member status.......

DDLE,
How is one promoted from Jr. Member to the next level?
It's in the FAQ section.
You need to have at least 50 posts to become a ZO6 member. And 100 to become a ZO6 Addict. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
Don't quote me, check the FAQ section. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

There's a lengthy ritual that involves a quart of mobile 1 and muck dog's barbie doll...
I think that it will still come down to the driver. Unless it is a RT/10.

By the way,
When a driver gets to the point of wanting or owning a ZO6, they should be a good driver, especially with the "stick".
I think that the 02' could definitely beat the Viper, and the 01' is also highly capable of killing the snake. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

In what category??? 1/4 mile, 0-60, Road course??? which are you refering to?
I think it will still depend on the drivers, the venue, the mods on each car and who gets the jump.

Plenty of Z06 owners don't match the GM's 2001 spec for the car of a 12.6 quarter. A similar proportion likely won't match the 2002 spec of 12.4. Same phenomenom applies to the Viper.

Good driver in a stock Z06 running a not-so-good drvier in a Stock Viper, any any year (before 2003), would be a close race with a slight edge to the Z06.

Equivalent drivers in 2002 Z06 vs Viper, I'd give the nod to the Viper. Sorry guys.

In other words, you're saying the 02 is so much better than the 01?

I don't think 20 extra HP (5.2%) is going to be so much more special that now you can take on the mighty viper (450 HP) in pure power.

The 02 is more powerful, but only 5 little percent, so don't go geting all punch-drunk and saying it's that much better than the 01.

Add some nitrous or turbo or supercharger, then you can look down at us stock 01ers.

Besides, as soon as I can order them, I'm going to get the 02 airbox and MAF part, and I'll be very close to 02.

Can I challenge the Viper then?

I want whatever everyone else is smoking...
A stock GTS will take us in any area of acceleration unless someone misses a gear.
On a roadcourse whole different story and it comes down to the driver in my mind.
But for power folks give the devil his due..our car's are quick but vipers are definetly quicker.
Good question!

My hunch is that it would be real close, but as others have said....depends on the driver.

In everything, 1/4 mile, 0-60, and Road course. As I had read from many magazines such as C/D, R/T.....etc, the time on a 97 Viper GTS is not that much more than the Z, 0-60 MPH in 4.2-4.4 sec, 1/4 mile in 12.6-12.8 sec. From the number, I figured I can take a Viper and let driver's skills determine the rest.
Overall the Z is a better value as most car magazines seems to confirm.

Do you really think that GM only increased HP by 20 ? Many 01's dyno around 340 X.85 = 405 hp so I bet the 02's are underrated.

With a competent driver, all categories.
Having owned both... and still love both! It comes down to this... (Watch out... it is gonna get ugly here...)

Q: How many Vette Owners drive with T/C ON?
A: ALOT!

What does this mean... if you drive with T/C... don't count on beating a Viper! If you are one that can wring out your beast run consistent low 12 sec ET's you will have a good shot at beating the other "DRIVER"... However... Equal Driver's... (Equally Good that is!!) The Viper wins Hands Down! However Equally 'bad' Drivers... then the Vette would get my nod, due to T/C etc...!

As for Road Racing... It again comes down to Driver's... although here the tables turn slightly, and favor Corvette, purely because the Corvette is easier to drive at it's limit! The Viper's require ALOT of skill to be able to take them to there limits... so if you have a decent driver in both.. the Vette could pull it out... If you have an Excellent driver in both the Viper Should be able to walk away (and if you start comparing the '01 and newer vipers w/ ABS... the Road Course is that much easier for them)

We have a viper/z06 owner who will probably check in...I believe the viper will do the z by a couple car lengths in the quarter on the average. I am hoping the 02 [on order]
could make it dead nuts...I believe an 02 or 01 with headers, good intake would be equal up to about 120 mph...my 2cw
Headers, Intake and Exhaust could definitely even the score, and help put the Vette ahead a bit!
I asked this question because I'm tired of blowing away those rustang Cobras and GTs. I want to play with something that is in the same class. I want to keep my car stock as much as possible, but will do bolt-on mods here and there along the way. All the race that I've done is from stop lights to stop lights and on highways where there are nobody around. I don't have any racing experience, but would like to learn more from all of you experienced driver here.

Question #1: What would be the best gear to throw in when you are doing about 70 MPH? I usually throw it into 3rd and just floor it. The Kirban will get me there in a hurry without mistaken for 5th.

Question #2: What would be a perfect RPM for launching from a dead stop? I usually launch it from 2000 RPM and control the clutch not to allow too much wheel spins.

Thanks

3rd is proper for 70... 2nd gear does between 68-71 MPH... so realistically 2nd isn't going to be appropriate unless doing less than 60MPH

That sounds about right 1800-2200 w/ Slight clutch slippage.

Thanks

Hope this helps!
