The t-stat I replaced was factory, and would run at 200F, now with a new Gates180F the car is wanting to run at nearly 240F. Fresh 50/50 antifreeze and all seems a little hot, was thinking it might run around 220F or so. any one else have a problem with Gates t-stats?
Sounds like it's not opening enough. I have a 180 in my 2008 and it opens at 180. The operating engine temp is more a by-product of the outside temp and the speed you are traveling. Also, if you are in 6th gear the engine will run hotter because the water pump is not turning as fast as it would be in the lower gears. My C5 Z would run between 195 and 200 on a hot day with AC on.
I would check first that there is not air in the coolant system as that would cause hot temps
