I will need tires pretty soon and would like to get better straight line traction. I still want good every day tires that have better traction when needed. Mich. PS2 ZP is what I'm looking at. does anyone have any better ideas?

I would look at the Michelin Pilot sport 4S. They are not run flat but most people don't want them anyhow. From what I have read they are lighter than the run flat so a little less un-sprung weight and the footprint looks to a little bit wider the OEM tires they replace. I myself have been waiting for my Goodyear's to die so I can put these on. The reviews are great and they seem to perform better than the PS2's. I also think they now have them available in all sizes to fit the standard Z06 rims.

Try looking at the BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2

I have used them in 275/35/18 (10" wide rims) and
335/30/18 (12"wide rims) for some years and they are better in traction, good footprint, less spin and have good lifespan
over the bad luck I had with the pilots

I looked for both of these tires online found the 4S but could not find the KDW 2 in my size. I still use stock wheels. Both tires spec's say they can't even be stored in less than freezing temps. Is that true?

I would recommend that you go to the official Michelin tire website and click on the "live Chat" button. Then you can ask them all the questions you need answers to and them print out the conversation for future reference, that way when the rep tells you one thing and the nitwit at the tire store tells you something else you will be prepared so you don't get screwed. I think the last press release I did read about the 4S was that it will not perform well in below freezing weather. I know the sport cup tire cannot be stored below freezing. You will also notice that the Michelin tire has a little wider contact patch that the Goodyear run flat if that is what your car had as OEM tires.

I just looked at the engine briefly , but it looks like the thermostat is buried under as few other parts . I am NOT a mechanic so I really am not quite sure I was even looking in the right place.

How difficult is it to change the thermostat ?

Do not know how a post about a coolant Tstat is in a thread about tires so should be moved
But the Tstat housing is mounted by 2 bolts to right front of engine, just follow the large coolant hose

With engine cold you could put a pan or large pail on ground with Tstat opening above it
loosen both bolts and let coolant drain out
Swap Tstat housing with new Tstat and re-install housing

Add coolant and after 2-3 drive cycles ( use heater to help move coolant through system)
check surge tank and add more coolant as air that was trapped has purged out
