I am currently at 8200 miles and have been steadily using a quart of 10W-30 Mobil 1 every 1000 miles since the 5000 mile oil change. I don't even look at the dipstick except at the 1000 mile points. Prior to the 5000 mile mark, I was burning about a quart every 1200 to 1300 miles.

QUESTION: Is there any current experiences with high mileage 10,000 plus mile Z06s with a similar rate of oil burning (qt / 1000 mile) where I could gain some comfort that my oil burning rate will stay constant or perhaps improve over the next 10 to 15 thousand miles?? Any negative experiences?? As long as the oil burning rate stays constant, I do not intend to have the re-ring job. I am quite comfortable putting a quart in every 1000 miles.

That's quite excessive. Mine burnt 1/2 a quart every 3000 mile. Unless, I got on it all the time, then it would burn a little more. I have 12,000 miles on my Z right now. I was out at the 1/4 mile track the other day, but it didn't burn any at all.

Hi there,
Unfortunately, I would say that you should start your oil consumption test now.
I just did one with 21000 miles on it. He was at about what you are at, consumption wise.
Sorry, but I think your in line.

Mine used 3 quarts between 4000 and 10500 miles. Changed oil went om 3300 mile trip as well as taking it to track at driving school currently at 14200 miles and so far no usage. Good Luck

Mine's at 17K miles. Oil consumption is steady at 900-950 miles per quart for the last 7K miles or so. Consumption rate remains the same regardless of how the car is driven.

Dealer said they'll change the rings when I'm ready. Not sure I want to risk it.

I have just under 11K miles and just got the Low Oil message right on cue at 1000 miles.

Have already spoken to the dealer and they have ordered the parts for the ring job. As scary a thought as it is to have the job done, I have spoken to the Vette specialist at the dealership (Dick Engle), and now feel comfortable that this is the right course of action.

I just feel that the new rings will be better for the car long term, and since I plan on having the car for several years...

Mine has used oil since day one. Presently at 14K and still going through a qt. every 1100 to 1500 miles depending on how I drive. I do not spend anymore time than I have to over 3000 RPM. According to GM, I don't qualify for the rings.

I have right at 10,000 miles on the car now and its oil consumption is getting less with mileage. At first it was a quart every 1000 miles, then a quart every 1500 miles. I just got the low oil warning Friday after 2000 miles. I'm not going to worry about it and just enjoy the car.

Your dealer is FOC.........you have started driving your auto ,like a Cavalier............because it uses oil...if you drive it the way it's meant to be driven..........
You need to get LOUD, and get this problem fixed.......if I had to drive a Z like that, Darned if I would own it......what is the use???.
Call your local GM Zone manager....................START with him/Her...........
GM, has already RE purchased some Z's, and other C5's for this very reason, and the folks that DO get buy backs, are signing "NO TALK", contracts to keep GM out of further hot water..........
Like, Class action lawsuits...................

When I said I stay under 3000 RPM as much as possible, I meant that I don't drive around town in 4th gear keeping the revs above 3000 for a sustained period of time. A sure way to burn oil with these cars. That doesn't mean I don't wind it out while going through the gears.

Use Trip-2 for tracking oil consumption

Gold72,

One other thing. I use the DIC's 2d trip meter to track oil consumption. I reset trip-2 when I change the oil. And then reset it when the "low oil level" light comes on and is verified on the dip stick. Have followed this method of tracking since about 5000 miles. Now at 17K I have confidence that oil consumption isn't getting any better or worse; still around 900-950 miles per quart.
