Anybody run a viper yet?

Just curious if anyone has run across a viper to see how close we are performance wise. I know they out power us by about 50hp but just would like to know in the real world how they stack up. There is a red one in my hometown now, only one I know of around here, maybe we will hook up one day!

Yes I did!, it was on the street a blue and white gts, to make a long story short, we went from about a 20 MPH roll and I beat him by about 1 1/2 to 2 cars, we then caught a stoplight, just me and him ,I rolled down the window , and asked him if he wanted to go from a stop, and he declined and turned off, you should have seen the look on that mans face! pure shock.

Actually I've ran 2 Vipers at our local drag strip here in Albuqueruqe (5600 ft.). Our Corvette club had a drag day, and one of our members has a Viper, as well as a few Vettes. His car is completely unmodified, and he is an experienced bracket racer. I ran him straight up in practice twice and beat him both times. I was turning 13.1s to his 13.4s ( he never did get better than 13.3). We were both at about 112 mph. My times corrected were 12.2 at 120 mph. I also ran a modified Viper that same day. He beat me good thanks to a good case of axle tramp which costs me about 1/2 second every time the car decides to do that (wish I could figure that problem out, it's the inconsistency that bothers me most). His time was only 12.99 though, so I would have been really closse if I'd had a good launch. Z06s are for real!

People just dont seem to understand, on the street a stock Viper vs a stock ZO6 is a total toss-up.

I don't know about a toss up. I've seen one pull hard on a ZR-1 on the street. The Z had some work done and the Viper was stock. I would love to give it a shot though. From what I have read on the other forums the Vipers are ahead.

TomE from the CF came to Pomona in his red Z06 in August. I raced him in my GTS and ran a 12.5 to his 13.0. I think he ran a 12.8 by the time the day was over, and I ran a 12.4. This was stock vs. stock. Now Tom is running 12.4's with Halltech, and I'm running in the mid-11's (on ET Streets).

Since I own both, here are my observations: for stoplight-to-stoplight races or 0-60 runs, the two cars are very close, primarily because the Viper is a b**** to launch, especially with the stock 3.07 rear end. Too much throttle and you leave hundreds of feet of rubber down the road. Too little throttle and you bog. The best 0-60 time (G-Tech) I've gotten on the Viper with street tires is 4.22 sec. Best with the Z06 is 4.15 sec. So, for short-distance races, it's really going to come down to the driver. I don't doubt that Dave beat a Viper at the track, but I bet Dave drove better than the Viper guy on that run.

If you drive the Viper well, you can run 12.0's at 118 mph very consistently (in stock form, at sea level, etc.). I am not that good. Some Viper guys have gotten as low as 11.8 in stock trim. I just don't think the Z06 has the kind of top-end the Viper does. My Z06 certainly does not, but I got one with a "bum" motor (only 336 rwhp!).

I just traded my Camaro SS in for a black ZO6 last Mon. I am thrilled with the performance( although I am babying it for the next few hundred miles) I have a low nine second '69 SS camaro but the ZO6 is still a blast to drive. I was drving home the other night and a guy in a WS6 Ram-Air Trans Am flew by me . At the next light I didn't pull all the way up, I stayed a car and a half back to see if he was going to run. Sure enough, the light turned, I saw him launch, then I hit it. Without exaggeration, I pulled by him like he was standing still, after enough embarrassment, I let off. The next light he rolled his window down and said, Oh, that's a ZO6, I was just reading about them and was wondering how they ran. I said, now you know-1st hand! Getting smoked with his girlfriend in the car added to the victory.
Outside of HRE, Hickock, or Budnik, does anyone know of any nice looking wheels for the ZO6?
The dealer where I got my ZO6 from had a white one that was taken out one afternoon by a service manager who was meeting a Dodge service manager for lunch ( so they said)who just traded a Viper GTS, obviously, lunch turned into three races- from a roll and from a stop(2x)the ZO6 won all three by a half a car length to a full car.

On 2001-01-27 02:36:00, DaveZehak spewed forth this drivel:
People just dont seem to understand, on the street a stock Viper vs a stock ZO6 is a total toss-up.
WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!!!!

Guys, the Viper has around 500 HP and TQ...not to mention it costs twice as much as a vett. I race SCCA T1 and the Viper eats our lunch down every straightaway...I mean 5-10 car lengths every time. I drive a new Z06 and because of the rules in T1, all the cars have to be pretty much stock. The only place the vette is much better is in the braking areas. Pre-2001 Vipers don't have ABS and they are heavy. After a few hot laps, their brakes fade a bit and we start to close in. The vettes handle marginally better, but that's pretty much determined by the driver...as is most track stuff. But, an equal driver in each car and the Viper will outrun (straight line) a vette every time!!!! No contest!

I think the vette is overall the best sports car for the money hands down and on a road course for 30-40 minutes, it can win if the driver is great. The problem is that the Viper can make up for huge mistakes with all that horsepower and the vette cannot.

Want proof of what I'm talking about? Let me know and I'll send a video of the last SCCA national race at Road Atlanta - http://www.tracktapes.com. You'll see the Viper walk on me down the straight and me close it back up under braking. Remember though, any idiot can plant their right foot (drag race), but it takes a real driver to road race!
