I'm changing my rotors again and decided to paint the brake pad retainers so they have to be dust and grease free.
I've tried GUNK, two types of brake cleaning sprays and also let the retainers sit in another degreasing solution all night. NOTHING will remove the caked on dust even after hard scrubing :eek2: I'm seriously thinking about soaking them in muriatic acid. Does anyone have any experince cleaning these for painting?

CLR or LimeAway might work if you soak it overnight.
If that does not work then sandblasting is probably the only thing left.
If the caked-on dust does not affect the smoothness of the finish after painting, just paint over it.

I was thinking about using CLR but thought I would try a 4" diameter brass buffing wheel I had kicking around. Most of the carbon deposits were removed with the previous cleaning and the buffing wheel removed the hard stuck on crap and buffed it to a nice finish for painting. It's a bit more work but I think it will look great when finished. I'll post pics when done.
