Just picked up the new Car and Driver. Second line of the article and I quote. "If you own a Corvette 5.4, the 2001 385-horse Z06, it is now on a depreciation schedule akin to that of an IBM Selectric."
Ouch!, thats not nice. All I have to say is that my Torch Red/Modified Red will be as sweet in 2002 and 2003 as it is right now. The 2002 will be obsolete when the 2003 comes out and so on and so on and so on.....

What does "Corvette 5.4" stand for?

Anyways, all cars are made better each year, or else they wouldn't change the model year on them, they would all be badged as the same year. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif

I have an 02' on order but, I believe that the 01' is what started it all, so, it should be respected. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Since they said it was the 5th opportunity to buy the latest C5, I think what those idiots were referring to was the original C5 = 5.1, Convertible C5 = 5.2, C5 Hartop C5 = 5.3, '01 Z06 = 5.4 and '02 Z06 = 5.5, because the models were released in that order. I don't agree on their rationale regarding 5.4 vs. 5.5, however, because the Z06 gets a 20 horespower increase for '02, hardly enough to justify categorizing it as a new model IMHO. Also, they forgot to mention the 5 horsepower increase between '00 and '01 for the Coupe/Convertible. If 20 horsepower makes something entirely new, why shouldn't 5 horsepower count too. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif I can't wait until they actually roadtest an '02 to see if there really is any real world difference.

5.4 was the fourth year of the C5 (2001). 5.5 is 5th year of the C5 (2002 model).

True, but if you follow the rationale I proposed above, didn't they release each of the respective numbered models in a different model year?

The first year would be 5.0...................
In some other articles I have read, they used numbering similar to the computer term "version" 5.0, 5.1 etc.

Dave Hill made a reference to 5.5 not to long ago in an article but I don't remember where I saw it.

Don't you mean 5.7?? /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif That is the liter size of the engine.

</B></BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR NOSHADE SIZE=1 COLOR=AAAAAA></TD></TR></TABLE>

That was what I thought, but my fellow members have clered the issue up for me.

first year 1997 - 5.0
second year 1998 - 5.1
third year 1999 - 5.2
fourth year 2000 - 5.3
fifth year 2001 - 5.4
sixth year 2001 - 5.5

Got it?

The numbers still don't jive, I don't think they can count and probably meant to follow my initial proposal. JMHO. They stated it was the fifth opportunity to own the lastest C5, but the C5 is going into its sixth model year. If you follow what I said there was no change between the '99 and '00 model year, other than rims, so that would equal five different models coming out in five different model years as I proposed. Maybe someone should send a letter to the editor asking them where they come up with this hair-brain stuff.

I noticed something else in the artical, it said there were 7400 2001 Z06s built. Does anyone know if that is true?

Depreciation is like losing money on stocks.... you don't lose it till you sell. My stocks dipped 40% from their all time high and came back 15% so far but I have not lost anything and am still way up over buying CD's.

If my selectric was only .1 sec different than my Pentium 4 I would still be typing on it. I am a happy camper and right now I just hurt for the guys who are waiting for their '02's without having an '01 Selectric to type on........excuse me I think I will go for a drive and take the long, twisty way there.

Apparently C&D is good at being wrong. The correct number I have been seing is in the neighborhood of 5,700. 5,773 I think.

z06phil, this article illustrates the arrogance and the ignorance of the press corps. They get paid to write, and often, the more controversial the article, the more saleable it becomes. Shakespeare had it right "a tale told by an idiot"

It is an exceptionally rare reporter who gives a darn about the accuracy of what they write on their IBM Selectrics.
